I am a constantly positive and energetic idealist who is committed to integrity. When I believe in something, I am thoroughly dedicated to it. I strongly believe in the power of choice, necessity of compassion and empathy, beauty of freedom, and importance of service.
With two-and-a-half years of tutoring and classroom experience, I am confident I can meet you where you or your child are now and get you or your child where you want to be. For one year and nine months, I lived and worked in the Dominican Republic, working one-on-one and in small groups with students aged 5-11, focused on Spanish and English literacy and conversation. For four months, I worked as a tutor at a private school, specializing in one-on-one and small group lessons in reading and math for first graders through sixth graders. For three months this summer, I was a full-time nanny and tutor for three children, aged 6, 8, and 13. We had tutoring sessions four times a week for each child, focused on reading, reading comprehension, and math.
My tutoring style is based on the belief that children learn best when they are engaged and doing something they like to do. Therefore, I am an avid user of educationally-focused games (my math basketball routine was famous at the private school), technology, and a schedule that's filled with short and engaging activities. Each child is different, and I will base my plans on that particular child, never settling for a recycled lesson plan that will not work for them.
I believe that parents and full-time teachers know best about their child/student, so I am thankful for any opportunities to partner with full-time caregivers.
I genuinely see the possibility in each and every child, and I am excited about the opportunity to give special, patient, and persistent attention to the students who will benefit from it. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have experienced cooking lessons in four countries, including Thailand, China, the Dominican Republic, and the US. I am an avid cook and try new recipes frequently. Cooking is an easy process to act on, and I am confident I can teach children how to follow these processes with an extra flair.
I have two-and-a-half years of professional tutoring and classroom experience with elementary students in the US and the Dominican Republic. Through lessons specifically catered to each student, I have seen marked improvement in the 80 students I have tutored. I have focused on beginning reading and grammar, reading comprehension, vocabulary, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, long division, fractions, and word problems.
Through my position as lead teacher for the two youngest Spanish literacy classes, I have experience working with 15 students ages 5-8 on their handwriting. I also focused on handwriting with the youngest child I nannied and tutored for three months. On a personal note, I am frequently complimented on my own neat and easy-to-read handwriting. I can give you a sample if you'd like!
Reading is essential, and phonics is the building block for reading success. With over two-and-a-half years of experience working with young children who are just beginning to read in English and Spanish, I am confident in my ability to tutor in phonics. Phonics takes persistent and patient repetition, which can be made fun and engaging.
Public speaking is one of the most formidable skills a person can have, and I would love to work with children and adults on perfecting their speaking. In university, I graduated Summa Cum Laude in Communication and was the winner of the Public Speaking Contest held amongst the hundreds of students signed up for A&M's public speaking course. In one of my previous jobs, I traveled the country on behalf of a non-profit and directly spoke to over 50,000 people during 175 presentations. This is a practice-driven skill, so presenting in front of real people would be my main tutoring technique.
