About Andrew

I am passionate about helping students of all levels feel confident and succeed in school. I have seven years of formal tutoring experience, working with students from elementary school all the way to college. I first tutored in seventh grade as part of a community service project where I helped elementary school students complete their homework. I have worked with elementary and middle school students in math, science, reading comprehension, writing, and social studies. Additionally, I have successfully tutored students in chemistry and history from the middle school to the college level.

I work to meet students where they are in their progress and then devise a comprehensive plan to help them achieve their goals. I share with them the skills that I have learned that makes schoolwork not only more manageable, but also more enjoyable. I have spent years refining the study methods that I not only teach, but also use in my own school work.

In addition to tutoring, I am a student at Georgetown University where I am a history major while completing the pre-medical/dental school requirements. In my free time, I volunteer as an EMT on Georgetown University's ambulance. I graduated with honors from Andover High School in Andover, MA in 2013. I enjoy rowing, skiing, discussing politics, and spending time with my family and friends.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I am a history major at Georgetown University where I am concentrating in American and classical history. I have successfully tutored students in America, European, and world history at the elementary, middle, and high school level. I instruct students how to critically read for historical information, study for exams, and depending on grade level, write a research paper. Importantly, I believe history is full of fantastic stories that ultimately are relevant to the present.

Chemistry

I have three years of experience tutoring chemistry at the high school and college level. I have taken seven years of chemistry, including Advanced Placement Chemistry, a full year of college General Chemistry, and a full year of college organic chemistry. When I tutor chemistry, I break the concept down to its most basic level to ensure the student understands the material. Gradually, as the student builds confidence, I teach him or her the techniques to solve increasingly advanced problems.

Government & Politics

I have a passion for teaching and talking about the American government and political system. I worked for several years as an intern in the Office of Congresswoman Niki Tsongas where I had the opportunity to learn about the functions of government from the inside. While in high school, I self-studied for the Advanced Placement United States Government and Politics exam. I earned a five on the exam, which is the highest possible grade. I regularly follow developments in both the national and Massachusetts politics. When I tutor in government or politics, I focus on building a basic understanding of the underlying issue. I then present the student with multiple viewpoints and challenge him or her to understand each of them before drawing his or her own conclusion.

Study Skills

I have extensive experience teaching study and organizational skills that help students succeed. I focus on establishing reasonable goals, setting a schedule to achieve those goals, and then doing an honest followup assessment to determine if the goals were met. I teach students how to successfully manage a research paper, from taking notes and assembling an outline to editing. I have developed these techniques based upon my own experience as both a tutor and a student.

Great Tutor

Andrew M. is a VERY GOOD tutor, and I feel fortunate to be able to find him so easily with WyzAnt. I truly don't know what I would have done without this service.
