About Amber

Hello! I am excited to introduce myself as a Wyzant tutor. I truly believe in the power of education to lead to a more fulfilling life - the world is a big place and I would love to help you uncover it.

My general credentials thus include an MA from Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in International Economics and International Relations with a 3.7 GPA, a cum laude BA in Global Affairs, French, and Art History, from George Mason University, and a GRE score of 167 (verbal) and 159 (quantitative).

My tutoring strengths include:
- Economics. I took several classes as an undergrad as well as received my MA in development economics. I am thus comfortable with both basic economics as well as intermediate and more advanced and applied economics, including econometrics.
- Writing. I served as an editor on two separate student journals and in a professional setting, published an article while in grad school, and I have had three separate professors request to use papers I wrote as examples for future classes. Writing has also been an integral part of previous jobs.
- French. I have studied the beautiful language since 7th grade, including during college both in the classroom and studying abroad, and in preparation for passing a French proficiency exam in order to receive my MA. I have also spent over two years living and working in francophone countries, most recently in Mali from early 2015 to late 2016.

I do have a 24-hour cancellation policy, but will not apply it for the majority of cases. I am willing to work with you to schedule a make-up class within a few days.

I am eager to meet you and help you on your path to success! If you have any questions, do not hesitate to reach out to me. Cheers!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Econometrics

Having just finished my master's in international economics, I have completed multiple econometrics courses. I received As in these courses, which include econometrics, applied econometrics and microeconomics of development. I am proficient in the relevant mathematical proofs and concepts as well as how to use Stata to apply these concepts. I am also comfortable with panel, time-series , and cross-sectional data.

Economics

I have a master's degree in international economics, specializing in development economics. I received As in a majority of my economics classes, which include principles of micro and macro, intermediate micro and macro, trade and monetary theory, microeconomics of development, and econometrics, among others. I frequently assisted friends and classmates in many of these classes.

French

I have several years of formal French language training, from middle/high school to college and graduate school. I have also lived and worked in francophone countries for over two years, most recently in late 2016. My extensive education means I have an in-depth understanding of the language while my experience living/working in French means I am very comfortable using it.

Microsoft Excel

In addition to working in Excel for a number of years to perform a variety of tasks such as budget formulation and record keeping, I completed graduate-level coursework that required an advanced-level of knowledge in this versatile software. For example, I have built complicated financial models involving multiple worksheets and complex formulas.

Writing

I have served as an editor in both professional and academic settings. As a graduate student, three separate professors requested to use papers I wrote as examples for future classes. And, most recently, I published my first article in an academic journal.

We definitely see an improvement in our daughter's performance and in her attitude towards French class. Amber always has a set of topics to cover and is able to address topics on an ad hoc basis when needed.
