About Dawn

Hello there future student!

I am so happy you decided to check out my profile. I have been tutoring and teaching several subjects in foreign languages and the arts for the past four years, and I have loved every moment of it. I teach all skill levels and ages in all subjects listed below, but do have a special place in my heart for beginners and those desiring to improve. I also have several online courses available through the online class platform, "Udemy." If you would like to get a sense of what it is like to work with me, I would suggest taking a class or two online as well!

Read below for all the specifics on what I offer.

French:

I first learned French as a child living in Mons, Belgium. After living there for several years, I formalized my studies at American University's School of International Studies. I graduated with a degree focusing on the French Language and European Culture. After graduating I continued to teach private and group sessions as well as formal remedial French classes at George Washington University.
I currently offer both private and group lessons, taught either online or in the Washington DC area.

Ballet:

I trained in classical ballet, pointe, partnering, modern, and choreography under the direction of former principal dancer, Lisa Avery. I currently continue to train locally with the Washington Ballet School and teach classical ballet throughout the Washington DC area. I teach private and group classes to both beginners who are looking for a gentle and playful venue to learn how to dance as well as pre-professional students who are looking for reinforce their training or prepare for major auditions and competitions. I also offer choreography and variations training for select students.
For studio lessons, I am open to working with the location of the student's choice or in a local rental space located in downtown DC.

Piano:

As a singer/songwriter, the piano is my main instrument. I have been playing piano for 19 years, mainly self-taught. My main focus with beginners is to help the student learn a basic foundation in theory, develop a sense of play and ease with learning, and discover what style and genres they like. For students who already have a strong foundation, we focus on musicality and precision.
I typically teach online or in-person in the Washington DC area. Group lessons only by request.

Learning Online?

A majority of my students, particularly language students, prefer to learn online. I really enjoying teaching virtually! Until recently, I have primarily used Google Hangout and Skype for online sessions. WyzAnt now has an online portal which I have enjoyed using - it is easy, efficient, and has lots of fun tools!

If learning online simply isn't your thing or if you need specific in person training (particularly for music and dance), I am open to meeting in the Washington DC area. If there is significant travel, pricing may shift.

Is this what you do with your life?

Well, yes! Partly! I love teaching and enjoy making it a big part of my daily life! However, I am primarily a singer/songwriter, model, and dancer/choreographer. You can find me online via Culture Dawning, my website, to learn more about who I am and what I am up to.

Thank you so much for reading about me! Feel free to reach out with any questions or even just random thoughts! I love to hear from people.

Cheers,
Dawn

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ballet

I privately tutored in ballet, pointe, partnering, choreography and modern dance under the direction of members of the NYC Ballet and the American Ballet Theater for five years, while graduating under Lisa Avery in 2006.

I currently teach ballet students around the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore areas, and continue to train with the Washington Ballet School, run by the Washington Ballet Company.

I am available to teach online or in a local studio. For students interested in choreography sessions or weekly lessons, I will often work with Dance Loft located in downtown DC to rent dedicated, private space.

French

I first learned French as a child living in Mons, Belgium where I lived for several years. Upon attending university in Washington DC, I formalized my studies of French, Spanish, and Arabic, graduating with an undergraduate degree in European, French, and Arab studies from American University.

I have tutored students from all backgrounds and skill levels for the past four years. While each student has a different skill level, from beginner to near fluent, I ensure that the basics are always mastered in an easy and accessible way. Learning a foreign language should be fun and engaging - not stressful or difficult!

Piano

I am a singer-songwriter, and the piano is my main instrument. I have studied the piano for 19 years now, and have taught students (typically beginners to intermediate) from ages 5-60! I believe music should be FUN and not stressful. I do teach a solid foundation in theory, but my main objective is to have each students reach their own goals and to enjoy the process.

I am able to work with any curriculum you prefer, or can develop a weekly plan for us - to your preference. Many of my students learn online, but I am open to traveling to your location or having in-home lessons.

Voice (Music)

I have trained as a singer for 10 years. As a mezzo-soprano, I have won several state-wide awards for vocal performance, performed at the Kennedy Center and around theaters in the DC metro area and Europe. I am now in the early stages of developing my own singer-songwriter career!

Très bien!!! — I tried a couple of French tutors before finding Dawn. They were all good, but Dawn stood out. She is superb, so glad I found her! She's perfect for my needs: flexible, enthusiastic, patient, and really kind. And she knows her stuff! Because she's lived both in the USA and abroad, she has a really interesting perspective. She also has a lovely sense of humor, which is great for setting nervous stu ...
