About D.

I am a Turkish instructor who holds a PH.D. in history, with a specialization in the late Ottoman and Republic of Turkey's modernization history. I have over 20 years of experience teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels at the university. I have also taught adult education courses, and at the high school level. I love to teach and see my students progress in their subject of interest!

My current academic interests include the following: Turkish culture, oral history, migration, intercultural communication issues, and the personal stories of Turkish immigrants migrating to the United States. Since my academic background is in history, I can give my students many insights into Anatolian culture, customs and cuisine; Turkish regional history; and background on current events and politics.

For our language study, we will use conversation and textbook exercises to learn grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. We can focus on the particular reasons why the student wants to learn Turkish -- for example, to work in a profession, or for travel, or just for general interest in the country and its people. Besides history and culture, I also have a good background on medical terminology.

I am also happy to negotiate with groups who are interested in learning together. Please contact me directly to discuss the details.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
