About Sasha

Hi there!

I recently received my Master of Science degree from the Johns Hopkins University Energy Policy and Climate program in DC. In addition to language learning (see below), I would be very happy to conduct classes on math and science. I have studied climate science, geology, chemistry, and physics extensively, and have taken advanced calculus and statistics, making me completely comfortable teaching any of these disciplines at least through high school level, possibly higher depending on the topic. Writing and grammar are a vital part of my background, and I would love to teach them as well. Even though I find them all fascinating, I am especially fond of climate science and energy technology. The world is changing and this is a very exciting time for energy!

I spent 7 years in Taiwan teaching ESL to students of all ages (2 y/o to adult) and all levels. I thoroughly enjoy helping students break through any barriers they may have and have a knack for identifying problems and building curricula specifically tailored to my students' strengths and weaknesses. I focus on language production and active use and have encouraged many students to trust their skills and gain confidence in their language abilities. I have extensive experience helping students improve their conversational fluency, listening comprehension, pronunciation, and reading and writing proficiency.

I studied Chinese at Shida University Language Center in Taipei, Taiwan, have worked in a number of Taiwanese and Chinese companies in Chinese language environments, and passed the "Superior" level of the TOCFL Chinese Language test. I have also traveled extensively throughout Taiwan and China, am very familiar with Chinese culture and history, and truly enjoy Chinese study myself. Through my years of Chinese study and teaching ESL to native Chinese speakers, I have a deep knowledge of the differences between English and Chinese and of the best approaches to bridging this gap in a fun and interesting way. I've also been told that my accent is excellent and I'm often mistaken for a native speaker over the phone.

I am a very good test taker, and would love to help prepare students for any type of test, including SATs or language tests. I got a 1400 on my SATs (690 verbal, 710 math) back in 2001 when that was a strong score, and I believe that anybody can achieve good results with the proper approach.

Looking forward to meeting you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chinese

The language of the future! With this in mind, I achieved a high level of fluency in Chinese while studying at Shida University Language Center in Taipei, Taiwan. I've also worked in a number of Taiwanese and Chinese companies in fully Chinese language environments and passed the "Superior" level of the TOCFL Chinese Language test.

Elementary (K-6th)

I taught ESL in Taiwan for 5 years to students of all ages within this spectrum. I taught kindergarten for 3 years and elementary school children ranging from 1st-6th grade for 4 years. I've tutored many of my students one-on-one and have also taught many private students one-on-one outside of school upon their parents' request.

ESL/ESOL

I spent 5 years in Taiwan teaching ESL to students of all ages (2 y/o to adult) and all levels. I thoroughly enjoy helping students break through any barriers they may have and have a knack for identifying problems and building curricula specifically tailored to my students' strengths and weaknesses. I focus on language production and active use and have encouraged many students to trust their skills and gain confidence in their language abilities. I have extensive experience helping students improve their conversational fluency, listening comprehension, pronunciation, grammar, and reading and writing proficiency.

Phonics

I spent 5+ years teaching ESL students phonics in Taiwan. I am very familiar with bringing students from nothing to the alphabet to reading whole sentences and beyond. I've brought students of all ages through this process, from age 3 and up.

Reading

I have my Masters degree in energy policy and climate from Johns Hopkins and extensive teaching experience

Study Skills

I'm highly organized and have been since this age. I believe that a simple structure of organization, such as the use of calendars and note-taking, is very important to success. I can also help tailor a student's study habits to their particular learning style based on my 5+ years of teaching ESL among other classes in Taiwan.

TOEFL

I have extensive experience teaching test prep
