About Susan

Hi All! My name is Susan and it would be an absolute HONOR to tutor you or your student! I have an BA and MA in English Language and Literature. In my BA university, I spent a year and a half as a tutor for student athletes (and thus had to abide by NCAA rules regarding tutoring), a few months as an in hiuse tutor at my MA university, immediately after which I spent a year as the instructor of record for two classes of twenty four students each (some of which who came from the local high school, but primarily students who were college age). I have a true passion for success and it warms my heart when I see my students do well! Please feel free to contact me here so we can arrange a meeting in person, and I would be happy to do so at any time convenient to both yourself and your student! Whether your student is anti-English or just having difficulty preparing for college (or even in college!) I am 100% certain that together we will do GREAT!!!! Hi All! Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have, in the past, helped students take or retake the ACT (retake to earn a higher paying scholarship). Likewise, because I taught at the college level, I am capable to teaching this material because I know what is needed to succeed in college English classrooms.

English

I received a BA (2013) and MA (2015) in English. I also taught Composition I and II for the University of Central Oklahoma English Department.

Grammar

I have excellent grammar skills as part of my job as a teacher was to teach grammar. There was a specific section on each paper's grading rubric that involved the use of proper grammar. Likewise, as a tutor, much of my work involved the revision process. My students often ignored grammar in their first drafts, so my work revision often centered upon grammar and grammatical errors.

Proofreading

I am a qualified proofreader because I proofread works on a daily basis as teacher and tutor from 2011 to today. I always encourage my students to proofread their own work first, then once more by working backwards through the essay (which often catches grammatical/punctuation errors), then to have another person proofread (sometimes myself), then after any revisions, proofread once more before turning in any assignment.

Study Skills

As a tutor for the past three years, teaching study skills is one of the things I taught most often. I was also the academic chairwoman of my sorority and held multiple seminars on healthy study habits. Many students do not know how to study well, but with proper knowledge, are able to make the most of their study time. As I graduated with a 3.9 overall and a 4.0 within my undergraduate major, I am fully confident I can teach the study skills I mastered to my students.

Vocabulary

I have always had a large vocabulary, and continue to develop my vocabulary daily. I always try to use the most proper word in a sentence, not just a word that, while correct, isn't the best word to fill the gap. I tried to instill this belief in the students I tutored and taught. Moreover, I taught them that it wasn't just a matter of knowing a synonym, but going back and looking at the etymology of the word, and the word's possibly numerous and different meanings.

Writing

I have a BA and MA in English Literature. I spent 3 years tutoring college students, and specifically tutored them for writing classes. Additionally, I taught Composition I and II at the college level.
