About Makini

From an early age I was informed of the importance of a good education. It wasn’t until I began to tutor that I learned that the key to knowledge is not just a good education, but a desire to learn. With this in mind, I strive to impart desire for knowledge onto my tutees to motivate them to seek knowledge both in and outside of school.

My personal passion for learning brought me to Carleton College where I graduated in 2012 with a dual Bachelor’s degree in English Literature and the Studio Arts. By working with the best professors in these respective fields I have gained not only the information necessary to succeed in these studies but also the desire to share them with anyone interested. After I graduated from Carleton, I served as a member of the Minnesota Reading Corps as a Kindergarten Focus Literacy Tutor. While working with the Reading Corps I worked with elementary aged students (predominately Kindergarteners) on their reading skills to ensure proficiency by their fourth grade year.

Along with professional tutoring experience I have aided countless friends and family members with their higher educational goals. Whether it be editing a thesis for a friend on a strict Master's proposal schedule or helping my younger sister with her first high school presentation, I am always up for tackling a tough academic problem and will do so with creativity and patience.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Reading

After graduation I worked as a Minnesota Reading Corps Literacy Tutor whose main focus was aiding students in their reading comprehension abilities. I attended Carleton College as an English Literature and Studio Arts double major. While at Carleton I read and wrote incessantly and in many diverse forms, which has aided in my comfort with the written word.

Writing

I attended Carleton College as an English Literature and Studio Arts double major. While at Carleton I wrote incessantly and in many diverse forms, which has aided in my comfort with the written word. This coupled with my experience helping my peers and family write their academic papers has prepared me to help others with their writing woes.
