To a prospective student:
I know how challenging learning can be. Whether it involves hours spent pouring over math problems or puzzling over just the right turn of phrase in an essay, we have all encountered areas in our academic careers that stump us. As a tutor, I believe in achieving success through a combination of persistence, practice, and patience. I think that positive reinforcement and thorough explanations of how to combat problem areas are how we can plow through challenges together. Imagine that you have an essay on a book due, and you are having trouble putting your thoughts into words and crafting a top-notch response. I will start by discussing the major ideas of the paper with you, help you brainstorm how to tackle each section in a methodical way, go over drafts, and then imagine how the process might be amended for future papers. What if you need help with study strategies for the SAT or art history? I will work with you to determine how best you study, make plans to break down each unit into manageable pieces that will help the material stick, and then go over the subject matter with you. I have a flexible schedule to meet with students as often as necessary and think that building a relationship that relies on collaboration and encouragement will help students achieve confidence in whatever academic area needs strengthening.
I know first hand about tackling daunting academic challenges. I struggled with math in middle school and never thought I'd "get it." Yet through methodical studying, plenty of practice problems, and seeking help when I needed it, I was able to overcome my weaknesses in math and went on to graduate with my high school class's highest GPA in the subject. Indeed, I have enjoyed academic success, having graduated first in my high school class, attended Yale University, and gotten a master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania. During these years I have had the opportunity to lead study groups and volunteer as an elementary school math tutor. I enjoy teaching and getting to collaborate with students on different ways to solve problems and express ideas. I hope to have the opportunity to do so with you. To a prospective student:

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I worked as an editorial assistant at The Yale Review for three years, drafting international correspondence and evaluating manuscripts. I know what constitutes successful and evocative prose and have successfully taught students the same, through working on editing, proofreading, and answering prompts.
