About Amanda

I am a 7th grade teacher of Literature, Writing and Reading, as well as a member of Teach For America. I graduated from Williams College with a degree in Philosophy with Honors, and pursued a love of writing to Rutgers University, where I earned an MFA. As a TFA corps member, I have gained experience working with middle schoolers (5th through 8th) of all ability levels, particularly in Reading, Literature and Writing. I am also an experienced SAT tutor.

I am available to support students in completing their summer work and getting ready for next year! I approach tutoring and teaching with positivity and flexibility. Every learner is different, and needs different supports and different challenges.

I have worked extensively with ESL and ADHD students at the charter school where I have worked for the past two years. In addition to working with middle schoolers, I have experience with test prep and college essay writing. Feel free to get in touch and tell me what you need!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a Teach For America alum who served as a corps member in a charter school that ran from K-8. While I primarily focused on the 7th grade, preparation for my courses required a thorough understanding of the material my scholars had been exposed to in the previous years. The differences between what students are learning in the last few years of elementary school and the first few years of middle school are differences in rigor rather than differences in skill. Because I have worked with so many students of such varying ability (for example, 7th graders with the reading ability of 2nd graders), I am confident that I could be a flexible, dynamic, supportive, and challenging tutor to younger students, as well as older scholars.

Reading

I am a Literature Teacher with Achievement First. I have a Praxis II in Reading and I have an ETS Certificate of Excellence.
