About Andrew

I graduated with honors in history and economics from the University of Texas at Austin. I was an Arabic Flagship scholar with one of the premier Arabic language programs in the country. I completed a full year in Egypt studying Arabic after four years of coursework in Modern Standard Arabic, Moroccan and Egyptian colloquial dialects, and Arabic literature in Austin. I also worked as a translator with the Library of Alexandria, continue to do freelance translation work, and currently do consulting work for microfinance institutions in the Arab world. I scored a 3 (Superior) on the ACTFL/ILR language test, and as an experienced non-native student and speaker I am well equipped to help someone learning Arabic with reading, writing, pronunciation, speaking and grammar. I am also an obsessive student of history, specializing in the history of the British Empire in the 19th century, with a thesis on the subject that I am in the process of getting published. I currently live in Washington D.C., and look forward to the opportunity to tutor in the area. I graduated with honors in history and economics from the University of Texas at Austin. Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Arabic

I studied Arabic at the University of Texas for four years, where I was a member of the UT Arabic Flagship language program. I studied in Morocco during the summer of 2011 with Flagship, and was in Egypt for a full year starting June 2012 finishing my Arabic studies. I have received a 3 (Superior) rating for Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) on the ACTFL/ILR language test.
