About Mary

I've been an educator for more than 40 years. I've taught young children in preschool and graduate students in doctoral programs. I taught elementary school for seven years, was on the faculty at Antioch University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and George Mason University where I taught undergraduate and graduate students who were teachers, aspiring teachers, or teacher educators. For many years I taught adolescents in programs like Upward Bound, summer school, and summer work training programs. I've also taught seniors in drama and computer skills.
I am a creative writer and academic writer and researcher. I am also a performer. The many branches of written and oral language is where I can offer a breadth of knowledge and instruction--in writing, speaking, reading, and computer programs, such as Word and Power Point, that facilitate communication. I believe that learning should be a lifelong goal, and so I make sure that laughter and joy, curiosity, discussion, and discovery are a part of the learning experience. I strive to make learning applicable and creative so that it makes sense to the learner in a way that can be retained, rather than forgotten after the test.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a BA in elementary ed; an M.Ed in Educ Communications and Technology; a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction. I taught elementary Ed for 7 years, and taught teachers for 20 years.

Handwriting

It's interesting that handwriting is included, I thought it had disappeared in elementary schools with the computer. As an elementary school teacher I taught handwriting, among other things, to my students for seven years, in spite of the computer--how else would they be able to read cursive. I also am from a generation when we actually had a book about handwriting that I took home for homework in elementary school. I still have that book.

Phonics

I taught phonics as a part of teaching reading skills in my classroom of 1-3rd graders. I studied phonics as a part of my BA in elementary education. I also studied phonics as a part of my training in public speaking and diction in drama.

Praxis

I have a PhD in curriculum and instruction and was on the faculties of UNC-Chapel Hill, George Mason University, and Antioch University. I taught pres-service and in-service teachers in these institutions for more than twenty years. My strengths in the Praxis Tests are Writing and Reading.

Public Speaking

I studied public speaking as an undergraduate in drama. I have been a lecturer, a teacher, an actor, and a spoken word artist for 30 years. I have taught public speaking and diction to young adults, adolescents in summer programs, and to children in drama.

Social Studies

I taught social studies for seven years when I was an elementary school teacher. I have designed and taught a number of social studies courses for in serve and pre-service teachers in higher education. I am a student and scholar of history, philosophy, and culture as a part of my life and as a PhD.
