About Dexter

Dear Prospective Students & Parents,

Get ready to quickly learn, have fun, and gain confidence in your ability to do math—and raise your grades too!

In addition to SAT & ACT, I tutor for all high school math subjects—from pre-algebra to AP calculus and IB Mathematics. I've helped to significantly improve students' scores and grades (as much as from an F to an A) in high school math subjects for more than three years now. I also offer sessions to undergraduate students taking any subject up to differential equations.

I will come to your home or to a public venue (e.g. a library or coffee shop), wherever is more comfortable and convenient for your learning. My hours are also very flexible, including a wide mix of days, evenings, nights and weekends.

I truly believe that math can be fun and easy if it's broken down for you in a way that you can comprehend it. If you just need a tune-up, we can skip straight to the nuts and bolts. I'm very passionate about helping students succeed in math, because I believe it is the foundation of having a good set of life skills in general.

I graduated from Dartmouth College with a degree in economics and mathematics. There, I tutored calculus to several students. Post-undergraduate, I began as a volunteer group tutor before also becoming a private one-on-one tutor as well. I enjoy every minute of it, and it's been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life so far, one that has inspired me to become a secondary math teacher.

I value a student's desire to learn and commitment to having a good educational relationship. Being open about your needs, concerns, and things that are going well is very helpful to improving your math skills. My promise is to be supportive and to ensure that you have the best chance to do well.

Yours in math,

Dear Prospective Students & Parents,

Get ready to quickly learn, have fun, and gain confidence in your ability to do math—and raise your grades too!

"You will not find a better tutor."

It has been an absolute pleasure to work with your son and daughter, and to work together with you to ensure their success. I stand that it doesn't necessarily take a village to educate children; all it takes is a dedicated few to inspire students to do their best. I'm very fortunate to have this opportunity to be a part of their journey! And I appreciate your support of what I truly love to do. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

"Very thorough and extremely patient"

Thank you so much, Audrey, for the opportunity to continue working with your daughter! It's rare to find students who take initiative and want to do better always. I'm really looking forward to the next five months. You and your husband really make me feel like a part of their journey to succeed, and I'm going to miss that after June!

"Very patient has really helped to build my sons confidence"

- Fiona, Alexandria, VA on 10/2/13
Dexter replied on 2/1/2014

Students like your son challenge me to always stay on "top of my game!" He's a thinker, and it's been exciting to help him hone that quality into making math more fun, less fearsome, ad easier to learn for himself. He's becoming a more independent mathematical thinker, which puts a huge smile on my face. I look forward to working with him the next five months. He's a joy to work with! Thank you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Reviewing basic algebraic concepts (e.g. variables, order of operations, and exponents); understanding and graphing functions; solving linear (with one variable 'x') and quadratic equations (including ones with multiple variables and decimals/fractions); and reviewing pre-algebra concepts (e.g. mean, median, and mode).

Differential Equations

I took Differential Equations as an undergraduate during a semester exchange program. I received an "A+" in the course and also received honors as the top student in this course. I informally tutored students during the course, but never for a company. I feel very qualified to tutor this subject. I graduated from Dartmouth College with a degree in Economics and Mathematics.

You will not find a better tutor. — It is with great enthusiasm that I write this review. My daughter - a strong, consistent B student in math - worked with Dexter for 2 sessions because she only needed support to get over a few humps. I was astonished by the quickness with which he pinpointed her weaknesses while he acknowledged and affirmed her strengths. In one session, he shifted her thinking and forever changed her dependence o ...
