About Katelyn

Hello,

My name is Katelyn, and I hope to work with you as a tutor very soon!

I am a graduate of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. At Michigan, I studied English, political science, and secondary education. I completed 1 year of student teaching in Plymouth, Michigan, working as a 7th grade language arts instructor. Upon graduating, I took my teaching and language interests abroad to India, working as an English teaching assistant through the Fulbright scholarship program. I worked with students of all ages in India, honing my ESL teaching skills. When I returned to the US, I was eager to continue teaching and growing in my experiences.

For 3.5 years, I worked as an ESL instructor at a human rights non-profit in Chicago. I instructed adult immigrants with various levels of literacy. My teaching style is highly hands-on; I regularly incorporate relevant materials from students' lives, physical activity, songs, and games. I find these techniques increase both interest and retention. I now work as an education associate/researcher for a public consulting firm in the DC metro area. Outside of my career, I have experience with middle and high school, college and adult tutoring in a variety of subject areas.

I look forward to hearing from you and answering any questions you may have. Thank you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

I am so grateful to work with Katelyn. My son has ADHD, and has an allergy to sitting still, but Katelyn held his attention and accomplished so much with him in just a short time. I recommend her highly.
