I am a recent graduate from Duke University. I double majored in both Neuroscience and Spanish. Thanks to this combination I have an extensive background in science, math, Spanish, and writing. Although I am not a native speaker, I have lived in Spain for 4 months and traveled to Costa Rica as well.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As an undergraduate at Duke University, I took organic chemistry and received a high A in the class. I have an in depth understanding the material and am more than capable of explaining the concepts and mechanisms. Also, I was a peer tutor and both participated in as well as lead group study sessions.
As an undergraduate, I tutored peers in Spanish including grammar, writing, and speaking skills. I studied abroad for 4 months in Madrid, Spain. While there I volunteered with Helenski Espana, a human rights group. We taught lessons to school-aged children (in Spanish) on human rights and their basic rights as a citizen of Spain. I spent my last year of undergraduate as an ESL (English as a Second Language) tutor for a pregnancy center that targeted Spanish-speaking woman. There we tailored a curriculum to teach these women conversational English and the essentials that they would need for work, doctor visits, and everyday interactions. Also, this past summer (2012) I assisted in establishing a summer camp in Cartago, Costa Rica for school-aged children. As a camp counselor, I interacted with the children in Spanish and gave English lessons as well.
