For the past ten years I've worked as an Academic Skills and Writing Tutor with high school and college students. During my 25 year career as a Research Anthropologist I've conducted descriptive research (childhood obesity, physical and learning disabilities), taught independent studies and classes in research methods and academic writing (George Washington University, University of Maryland), and served as a communications specialist for the American Occupational Therapy Association. For the past year I've worked as a Writing Tutor with first generation and low-income students at Montgomery College (Rockville). The students I tutor are a mix of straight-ahead learners and students with learning disabilities and/or ADD/ADHD.

First consultation session: free First hour: $60 Subsequent hours on the same day: $60 Will review documents between sessions at no cost.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a semi-retired Cultural Anthropologist (Columbia University), with over 25 years of experience as a federally-funded bio-cultural researcher, university Research professor, and communication specialist/consultant (The Polio Society, The American Occupational Therapy Association).
I'm currently an Academic Skills and Writing Tutor and have served in this capacity at Montgomery College's TRIO Program, serving first generation, low-income and students with learning disabilities and/or ADD/ADHD. I am also the Mom of my college student 21-year old son, who generally manages with his ADD and mild learning disabilities.
I aim to assist students with ADD/ADHD develop new study habits and routines and find learning strategies to “work around” their attentional difficulties.

I have a 25 year track record as a qualitative researcher in cultural anthropology. My studies were funded by NIH, CDC, Department of Agriculture, and the Department of Education. I was a Research Professor in the School of Public Health and Health Services (George Washington University). I've taught cultural anthropology at the University of Maryland and George Washington University. Also, I've tutored first-generation Montgomery College students in their anthropology and geography courses. As a consultant anthropologist I've been involved in studies conducted by the National Academies of Science. My tutoring methods for writing academic papers include structured brainstorming, guiding students in their research or review process, helping students with critical thinking and advanced reading comprehension, and writing.

My current passion is providing one-on-one high quality educational experiences for a culturally and academically diverse group of college and university students. A current student is earning her Ph.D. in Anthropology at American University. Also, I have assited over forty students with graduate school applications and first-job applications, including personal statements, responses to essay questions, and resumes.
I recently have completed a one-year appointment as an Academic Skills and Writing Tutor at Montgomery College’s TRIO Program. TRIO serves first generation and low-income students and students with learning disabilities and/or ADD/ADHD. As a private practitioner, I’ve been providing these services to a diverse range of college and university students,earning BAs, MAs and Ph.D.s.
My academic training as a cultural anthropologist specializing in human development, socialization and qualitative research served as the foundation for becoming knowledgeable about the role of writing in teaching critical thinking skills and guiding students to develop new habits of using strategies to “work around” their learning disabilities, ADD/ADHD and difficulties in executive functioning and writing.
I acquired this new knowledge and skill set while serving as an in-class and online Instructor at George Washington University (2001-2010). I am an excellent communicator and administrator. I enjoy writing and making presentations to diverse audiences. My instructional skill set was polished while serving on the faculty of George Washington University's Community Service Learning Program. I guided students to plan, implement and evaluate health-related projects to serve non-profit organizations in DC and was responsible for program evaluation efforts each year.
Throughout my career, I’ve been valued by supervisors, colleagues and students as a highly skilled and energetic lifelong learner and teacher. Supervisors and colleagues view me as having a sensible and pragmatic approach to problem-solving and superior interpersonal, analytic and writing skills.
