About Grover

I teach digital media using the Adobe Creative Suite. I can show a student the fundamentals of design and layout. I can also teach digital photography. I have over twenty years of experience as a photographer and fifteen as a digital imager. I have experience in portraiture, architectural, fashion and photo-journalism. I have an excellent grasp of digital image capture and manipulation. I have working knowledge of image processing software such as Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, Photomatix and Corel Painter. I am familiar with image formats such as jpegs, tiffs and image compression schemes. Experience with curves, levels and color correction. I possess excellent typography and layout skills. I can handle a concept to finished art. Comfortable designing publications such as magazines, newspapers, brochures and corporate campaigns. I have experience with Quark Express, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Painter, and iLife

I am currently an adjunct professor at the University of the District of Columbia. I have taught high school in the DC Public Schools as a digital media teacher.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe InDesign

I use InDesign to design and layout print publications such as magazines, newsletters, CD/DVD packaging. I also taught it to high school students for five years, teaching the students basic and advanced concepts. InDesign now offers now features such as interactivity and output to epubs.

Adobe Photoshop

Photoshop is my favorite digital design software. I have been using since its introduction. It can be used for print, computer or video. I can teach a students the fundamentals such as selections and layers.

I enjoy taking my time to watch students progress in Photoshop.

Desktop Publishing

I have experience over 20 years of desktop publishing using Pagemaker, Quark, Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign.
I have used the above applications for all types of print publications and now I am using InDesign to design for mobile publications such as tablets

Drawing

My drawing experience started as a young child. I have been drawing ever since. I am self taught and formally trained. I can teach a student any style of drawing. I specialize in pen and ink but I can show you pencil, charcoal or whatever. I can also teach to draw and paint on the computer.

Graphic Design

I have extensive experience in graphic design as a teacher and working in the field. I can teach InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. My teaching experience has been for high school and university students. I am currently an adjunct professor at the University of the District of Columbia.

Macintosh

I have twenty plus years of Macintosh experience. I have used and worked on Macs since System 6. I can teach the basics of a Macintosh operating system and how to troubleshoot. I can show students how to install software and how to interface mobile devices.

Photography

My photography experience include both film and digital. I have many satisfied customers in portraiture, architecture and fashion. I taught digital photography for public schools in DC. I can teach a student any aspect of photography. We can shoot digital or film. I can teach you wet darkroom techniques or a digital workflow with Photoshop or Lightroom. You will learn about ISO, shutter speeds, apertures. I will teach you exposure and composition.
