About Mark

I have been a professional educator and tutor for the past 15 years. Originally, I began by teaching SAT English and Math for the Princeton Review after graduating from George Washington in 1996 and started teaching high school English full-time in 2000 after receiving my Masters Degree in English Education from Vanderbilt University. My length and range of teaching experiences have provided me with a wealth of knowledge and expertise in both subject assimilation and standardized testing instruction. I feel extremely confident in my ability to help students feel more adept with both the content of and strategic approach to standardized tests. While the majority of my instruction has been focused on the SAT/ACT and GRE, I do have experience helping with the LSAT/SSAT and as of the last two years in particular, a much more consistent clientele of GMAT students. In addition, I have worked with over 300 students from various schools in the Miami area on writing their college essays and helping them with related components of the college application process.

I feel highly skilled in most core subject areas, particularly English but also Math up to pre-Calculus. My true loves are American Literature and any form of writing. Outside of academics, I am keenly fond of playing tennis, squash, golf, and travel.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

As a former high school classroom teacher who has helped legions of former students and tutorees be accepted at top echelon universities, I am well versed in the college application process. Crafting an intelligent, insightful and individualized essay is second nature to me. I can further reinforce your sense of voice and help you articulate those aspects of your experience and goals you find most desirable.

ESL/ESOL

I have worked at an ESL language institute for the past few years. And I am certified high school English teacher.

Geometry

I have taught and tutored high school Math for 16 years, including Geometry.

GRE

I have been tutoring students GRE for over 15 years, have a Masters degree in English and I'm equally strong in math.

Praxis

I am a certified teacher in the state of Florida who passed the Praxis Math test with flying colors back when I was originally certified. I have a broad base of knowledge in all Math skills and categories. Moreover, I have extensive tutoring experience for Math standardized tests.

Public Speaking

As a longtime English teacher and master of rhetorical strategies, I understand the nuances and difficulties associated with public speaking. This is an art, not a science, but with practice and a deeper understanding of the communications process, one can become a much more proficient public speaker. I strongly believe that a speaking coach can help alleviate a student's fears, reinforce their strengths and show them the path to successful public speaking. Please contact me if you would like to improve your skills.

SAT Reading

I have taught these subjects for over 15 years and love building students confidence so they know the content and don't feel intimidated.

SSAT

I went to boarding school, and I've helped many middle and high school students with this particular exam.

Writing

I teach writing at the college level and have helped students of all abilities and needs develop and polish their application essay.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Mark did an excellent job tutoring my children for the upcoming HSPT. He was patient and more than willing to help them answer any question they were confused about.
