About Devinn

Hello,
I'm Devinn. I am a PhD student at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. I graduated salutatorian of my class at Rutgers University with a 3.99 GPA, and have multiple national and international awards for science and research including the Goldwater Scholarship and the Singapore International Pre Graduate Award. I was also a 2013 recipient of the Gates Cambridge Scholarship, an award given to 90 people across the globe, to study Plant Sciences at the University of Cambridge in the UK.

Operation Orgo:
I took organic chemistry as a freshman and the subject remains my favorite class-as you can tell by the orgo shoes- I received solid As in both semesters of Orgo. On the Orgo 1 and 2 finals I received a 220 and 232 out of 250. The score on the final that the professors say is high enough to guarantee an A in the course is 200 out of 250. I have multiple years experience tutoring groups and also one on one.

I take a very conceptual approach to organic chemistry. I think the reason why many people struggle with the subject is because they try to memorize all the information, which is the wrong strategy for those who want to succeed. When I began tutoring organic chemistry I barely needed to review the material because of how I learned the subject. My strategy for taking the course and what I will teach to my students is how to look at the molecule and reason out why a reaction occurs. My goal after every session is to teach my students to see the reactions as common sense. For example, the logic behind the observation that the "The nucleophile will attack the ketone the electronegative oxygen creates a partial positive on the carbon" is as simple as positive and negative attract.

My other subjects:
I can also tutor in all of the other subjects that I am certified in. If you would like to talk to me about my other subjects, I'd be glad to do so!

Thanks for reading my profile. I am looking forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

In High school, I took International Baccalaureate chemistry, which is a higher level. IB programs are an international AP equivalent. I received distinction on my chemistry coursework in college.

For my research in both my Masters and PhD, I regularly use concepts from high school chemistry. I have had three years of experience tutoring college level organic chemistry.

Genetics

I am from a biotechnology undergraduate background which has a heavy genetics and molecular genetics component. I have Masters research experience in synthetic biology which requires a strong understanding of genetics. Finally, my PhD coursework at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory had a genetics coursework component.

Organic Chemistry

I have over a year's experience tutoring groups and also one on one for the Office for Diversity and Academic Success in the Sciences and the NSF Biotech Scholars Program. My major is Biotechnology and I am double minoring in Chemistry and Biochemistry. My overall GPA is a 4.0.
