About Caitlin

I am a 25-year-old female who was a 2011 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh (main campus). I received a Bachelors of Science in Biological Sciences with a minor in Chemistry. I was involved in ecology research for two and a half years in a lab where they study plasticity, predator-prey interactions and the effects of pesticides in aquatic communities. I received a research fellowship during the summer of 2010 from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. I carried out my experiment within the Pymatuning Laboratory of Ecology where I studied habitat choice among predators and prey. The post-doctoral fellow whom I worked with on it is in the process of making the finishing touches to the scientific paper on this research. Hopefully, it will be published within the next few months and I will be the co-author. At the University of Pittsburgh, I was also in Tri-beta Honors Biology Club. I was the secretary for Pittsburgh Environmental Action for kids which is a program that creates an informative presentation of the environment and the challenges that threaten it. I would organize presentations, crafts, and contact local schools and museums to set up appointments. In addition, I was an active member of Project Sunshine which was a club where we participated in fun activities with families of children with medical disadvantages.

I have a wide range of biological science interest from ecology and environmental science to medical sciences such as microbiology and anatomy. I have worked as a pharmacy intern, a clinical intern at an orthopedic surgery office in Southern California, and I currently am a patient care technician at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. I have seen this subjects and how they relate to people's lives. I will be going to the peace corps in the Summer where I will be teaching secondary science. After I return, I am eager to attend graduate school in public health or as an aspiring physician assistant.
My teaching experience began when I was a babysitter/tutor for two elementary students in both math and science.

I have experience with a wide range of students in both age and academic position. When I return home I look forward to helping my sister with her 9th grade Honors Biology homework or my younger brother with his 5th grade science project ideas. During the fall of 2010 I was an undergraduate teaching assistant for "Introduction to the Biological World" freshman lab. I was in charge of 10 of the 30 students each week in guiding them along the 4-hour lab. I also had to pilot the lab several days before and give feedback on its length and problems I ran into, etc. I set up and took down the lab each week. I had office hours the night before for student questions on homework and lab reports. In addition, this past summer (2011) I was a nutrition and art teacher for the Pittsburgh Public Schools Summer Dreamers Academy. I was a full-time teacher for 6 weeks where I taught the fundamentals and importance of nutrition to a second-grade class through creative lessons and artistic projects. If you would like a list of my references, a copy of my transcripts, or any additional information please don't hesitate to ask. I look forward to meeting you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Study Skills

I was a science teacher in rural Kenya for the past 22 months and as part of my peer-counseling position, I led study skills sessions for large and small groups monthly.
