About William

I am a career changer who worked as an executive and professional researcher for many years in New York City. In 2009 I left my job and New York to become a teacher. Since that time, I have completed master’s degrees in Teaching and History at Simmons College. I am licensed to teach both middle and high school history and English, as well as middle school math.

I have had great success in tutoring the reading and writing portion of the SSAT, SAT and ACT tests, as well as the literature, US History and World History SAT and AP subject tests. I have numerous tips and tricks for making the best selections on the multiple choice portions of the test (even when you are not sure of the answer). I can also provide guidance for building essays that conform to the standards used in grading the written portion of the test.

In addition to test prep, I can provide tutoring in History and English Language Arts. I am familiar with most areas taught as part of the social studies curriculum. I have always had a passion for history and am well read in both popular and academic history. I have studied and/or taught courses in colonial, nineteenth and twentieth century American history, and have had a paper published on finding local abolitionists. I have also studied world history extensively, and worked as a researcher on a world history textbook. I have taught US History, World History and World Cultures. In addition to standard history courses, I can tutor in Political Science and Economics.

I am also well versed in the books used in the typical middle school and high school curriculum. I can also provide step by step guidance in creating effective essays.

I have tutored many students and had great success in raising their grades. I have worked with both struggling students working hard just to pass and with stronger students looking to raise their grades so that they will have a better opportunity to get into the college of their choice. I am very flexible in my methods, and do my best to find a way to connect with a student's natural learning strengths.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I have master's degrees in History and Education and am familiar with most areas taught as part of the high school social studies curriculum. I have always had a passion for history and am well read in both popular and academic history. I have studied and/or taught colonial, nineteenth and twentieth-century American history extensively. I also worked as a researcher for a local history museum and have had a paper published on finding local abolitionists.

In addition to my academic credentials, I have a lifetime of experiences that I can share with my students. I have traveled extensively and am a regular visitor to museums and historic sites. I regularly incorporate these experiences into my lessons.

European History

I have master's degrees in History and Education and am familiar with most areas taught as part of the social studies curriculum. I have taught European history from the Greeks through the modern era as part of World History. I also worked as a researcher on a world history textbook focused on the impact of European culture on the world.

In addition to my academic credentials, I have a lifetime of experience that I can share with my students. I have traveled extensively and am a frequent visitor to museums and historic sites. I regularly incorporate these experiences into my lessons. For example, when teaching a lesson on Medieval monasteries, I show slides of Skellig Michael, a seventh-century monastery located off the coast of Ireland that I visited a number of years ago. Having actually visited the site, I am much better equipped to convey the remoteness and austerity of monastic life.

Political Science

I have an undergraduate degree in Political Science with a minor in Economics. I have Master's degrees in History and Education. I teach US and World History, as well as Contemporary World Issues. In the past, I have taught classes in World Cultures.

Religion

In graduate school I took a course called "Lives of Faith." This course studied history through the use of the biographies and autobiographies of religious leaders.

As a teacher I taught units in World History and World Cultures courses on the following religions:
- Zoroastrianism
- Judaism
- Buddhism
- Confucianism
- Legalism
- Christianity
- Islam

I have lesson plans available to teach all of these subjects.

Social Studies

I have studied and taught history, civics, geography, politics and economics during the course of my life. Taken together these subjects form the core of the Social Studies curriculum. I have Bachelor's degrees in Political Science and Economics and a Master's degree in History.

Study Skills

I have worked with many students on study skills at both the middle and high school level. For many students the ability to organize their work and complete assignments in a timely manner is half the battle. I can work with students to organize their school materials and set up systems that will eliminate the disorganization and forgetfulness that sabotages so many students.

I can also teach more advanced students how to organize their work to prepare for exams, including how to create unit outlines and how to find resources on line that will assist them in their test preparation.

World History

I have master's degrees in History and Education and am familiar with most areas taught as part of the social studies curriculum. I have taught World history from neolithic man through the modern era as part of World History. I also worked as a researcher on a world history textbook.

Wonderful tutor - lucky to have found him! — William P. is a wonderful tutor who has a patient and soft-spoken manner. His breadth of knowledge is quite impressive, and gives him the ability to strongly assist a student in many possible subjects. He's a good listener, and his feedback is very reflective of not only what the assignment requires, but also what my son is attempting to convey. I recommend William without any reservations. ...
