I am an English Literature PhD candidate who specializes in teaching students of all ages and levels the value and practice of clear and persuasive writing. If you or your students work with me, we will focus on both small-scale issues like grammar, mechanics, and sentence structure, and on larger issues like crafting a strong thesis statement, developing paragraphs, and focusing your argument throughout your paper. More importantly, we will learn how those smaller details and larger concepts are actually connected and equally essential to strong writing.
I also focus on reading comprehension skills - how to read a text closely, how to locate the author's central claim, and how to identify the significant points in any given passage. Students working with me will understand that learning how other writers articulate ideas can actually help students to refine their own writing.
On one level, these skills are essential for schoolwork and test-taking, and we will work to make sure that you or your student are completely comfortable and confident with any standardized test or school assignment that comes their way. But reading and writing skills are also critical to our everyday life outside of school. No matter where life takes us, we are going to be better off if we understand how to communicate, and we learn that skill through reading and writing. If you work with me, I will help you to develop and nurture those abilities. I have had the pleasure of working with some great students through WyzAnt and look forward to meeting new tutees who are interested in improving their skills in written communication and reading comprehension. I am also available for short-term editing assignments. We've been very fortunate to have Rachel as our son's Tutor for Writing and Grammar. She has extensive knowledge combined with the skill and patience needed to make our son want to improve.
Rachel is one of the greatest tutors I have ever had. When we met the first time, she listened carefully to my needs and took thorough notes so that she could plan for the classes. She is creative and passionate in teaching too. We have had quite a few sessions so far, she does not stick to only one method. Sometimes, we will read together, sometimes we review my summary, and sometimes,we watch movie together then discuss what is going on in the movie and learn new words. The lessons are never boring. I have to admit that I am not a very punctual student due to my work. While on the other hand, Rachel is very punctual all the time, even if she commutes between her school and home by metro for long distance! You can clearly feel that she cares your progress, and enjoys teaching and sharing with you her knowledge on literature. I am so grateful for having her teach me and help me with my English!
Rachel was very helpful tutoring my son and teaching him the skills to support him in writing his English paper. She took her time to review the paper and help him to understand the concepts in writing a good essay. Thank you for your help.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
