Hello!

My name is Emily and I have been tutoring and helping students prepare for college applications for nine years. I am currently a high school History teacher with a Master's in Education with a concentration in Secondary Social Studies and Special Education. In addition to teaching and tutoring other students, I have also virtually home schooled three students in AP US History (I'm an accredited teacher), AP US Government and Politics, and Senior Level English. While my strengths are in English and History, I am very competent in math and science and have tutored in them for years.

I work with a good deal of students on their current schoolwork, but also help many with test preparation. I was exempt from taking the Praxis I exam for Elementary Education because my GRE scores were very good and I received national recognition for my Praxis II scores. While a majority of students I tutor are in elementary and middle school, I have a great deal of experience working with high school and college students as well, and I work with many adults to prepare for their GRE, Praxis, GMAT, and LSAT, as well as the ACT, PSAT, SAT, and SSAT for the younger students.

Overall, I am available for a wide variety of test prep, study skills, editing, and even violin lessons if that's what you're looking for (I've been playing for over 15 years and have given lessons to multiple students). I love teaching and tutoring and it's a great joy to me to be able to help students reach their full potential. Please reach out to me with any questions you might have - I hope to hear from you soon!

Elementary (K-6th)

Many of the students I have worked with have been in the K-6 grade. My mother owns a home daycare, so in high school and college I worked with the school aged children with their homework and tutored them outside of the daycare when necessary. Although I am currently a nanny, it is my long term goal to become an elementary teacher.

A large part of studying successfully is first learning HOW to study. I have worked with students to teach them how to take notes, test taking strategies, manage their time, become more organized, and use their class materials to their fullest advantage. By learning these study skills and more, students are much more likely to achieve their goals.

American History

In addition to majoring in History in college (with a concentration in American History), I became an accredited AP US History teacher and developed and taught my own AP course to a home-schooled high school student; she took the AP exam and received a 5 (the highest score possible). In addition to the AP course, I have been tutoring high school and college students in History for the past six years.

Not only great tutor, great individual.

This is an individual I like to use for my tutorial help all the time. I hope I get the opportunity to do just that again.

Matthew, 6 lessons with Emily

Great on both method and encouragement

Emily met with our daughter about ten times and really helped her on a number of fronts. She was skillful at showing our daughter how to approach a question or a problem, whether verbal or in math. She helped her see that she could go back and forth between information in the question and options in the multiple choice. She taught how to use the options to help her understand what the question wanted if the question itself seemed confusing. She worked with basic prefixes and suffixes to help our daughter broaden her vocabulary, building on similar words she already knew. She of course helped our daughter eliminate highly unlikely options and narrow it down to the point where if it was between two or three possibilities, she could make an educated guess - guesses which over the course of the exam have the probability of improving her score. On the writing sample, she was terrific at helping our daughter brainstorm and build spider diagrams, which our daughter had already learned in school, instead of a formal outline. This proved really effective. But perhaps most importantly, Emily's manner and encouragement gave our daughter confidence and comfort with the testing experience. I had the sense that when our daughter took the test, she carried Emily's calm and reassuring presence with her in her head.
