About Emily

Hello!

My name is Emily and I have been tutoring and helping students prepare for college applications for nine years. I am currently a high school History teacher getting my Master's in Education with a concentration in Secondary Social Studies and Special Education, which I will receive in the Winter of 2017. In addition to teaching and tutoring other students, I also virtually home schooled three students in AP US History (I'm an accredited teacher), AP US Government and Politics, and Senior Level English. While my strengths are in English and History, I am very competent in math and science and have tutored in them for years.

I work with a good deal of students on their current schoolwork, but also help many with test preparation. I was exempt from taking the Praxis I exam for Elementary Education because my GRE scores were very good and I received national recognition for my Praxis II scores. While a majority of students I tutor are in elementary and middle school, I have a great deal of experience working with high school and college students as well, and I work with many adults to prepare for their GRE, Praxis, GMAT, and LSAT, as well as the ACT, PSAT, SAT, and SSAT for the younger students.

Overall, I am available for a wide variety of test prep, study skills, editing, and even violin lessons if that's what you're looking for (I've been playing for over 15 years and have given lessons to multiple students). I love teaching and tutoring and it's a great joy to me to be able to help students reach their full potential. Please reach out to me with any questions you might have - I hope to hear from you soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

In addition to majoring in History in college (with a concentration in American History), I became an accredited AP US History teacher and developed and taught my own AP course to a home-schooled high school student; she took the AP exam and received a 5 (the highest score possible). In addition to the AP course, I have been tutoring high school and college students in History for the past six years.

College Counseling

In addition to going through the college admissions process myself, I was in charge of my younger (home-schooled) sister's application process, including SAT/ACT prep, finding colleges based on her financial and academic standing, applications, tours, and selecting one based on her acceptance offers. I have also met with 5 other students to counsel them through their college admissions process.

Elementary (K-6th)

Many of the students I have worked with have been in the K-6 grade. My mother owns a home daycare, so in high school and college I worked with the school aged children with their homework and tutored them outside of the daycare when necessary. Although I am currently a nanny, it is my long term goal to become an elementary teacher.

Praxis

I was exempted from taking the Praxis I as a result of my high GRE scores. I did take the Praxis II: Elementary Content Knowledge as well as Praxis II: PLT (K-6). I received national recognition for my PLT score (187) and did very well on the Content Knowledge as well (183). I'm confident in helping others reach passing scores.

Study Skills

A large part of studying successfully is first learning HOW to study. I have worked with students to teach them how to take notes, test taking strategies, manage their time, become more organized, and use their class materials to their fullest advantage. By learning these study skills and more, students are much more likely to achieve their goals.

Great Tutor! Very Personable and Patient

I'm so lucky to have found Emily as a tutor. She is so kind and patient with me. I am actually a freshman in college and I was looking for a tutor that would be able to help me pass my college level Algebra 1 course and she is doing exactly that. We have covered almost two entire chapters and are preparing for my next test and final. I've never been an expert at math and Emily is understanding of
