Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Mathematics)
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY (Master's)
I graduated with my M.S. in Applied Mathematics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY in December 2009. I love working with others and helping them learn new things. I feel that a comfortable setting to work in is one of the keys to success for any student. I can adapt my methods of teaching to your needs, as I have much experience working with so many different groups of people.
I have been tutoring since my sophomore year of high school, working with my peers who were having trouble in math classes. I taught summer school classes at Lowell Catholic High School in Lowell, MA for grades 9-11 in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry. I worked with RPI Tutor Time, where I tutored students in grades K-9 with various subjects. I also worked with the America Counts Program in Math B classes at Troy High School in Troy, NY. In this program, I worked with students in Math B to help them gain a more solid understanding of the Mathematics learned in this class.
I have also worked with special needs children at Merrimack Education Collaborative in Chelmsford, MA. While working here, I helped these students learn vital life skills in order to be able to become contributing members of the community.
I have worked through WyzAnt for a few years, and I love every minute of working with these students! I was also a Teaching Assistant in RPI's Department of Mathematical Sciences for Calculus 1 and 2 classes for my last 3 years as a student there. I taught smaller classes of about 30 to 35 students by myself, reviewing what is learned in lecture with the professor, and helping the students learn key calculus concepts.
Everyone has their own way of learning things, and so everyone needs things explained in different ways. Working with such a wide range of people has allowed me the opportunity to see the subjects I tutor in many different lights. Some people gain knowledge visually, others audibly, and others in a hands on setting. There is always a way to make that light bulb turn on!
Lesson Cancellations: Lessons canceled within 24 hours of the scheduled lesson time will be charged half of the planned lesson time. Lessons canceled within 2 hours of the schedule lesson time will be charged for the full planned lesson time. I do realize that things come up occasionally, so this will be reviewed on a case by case basis when necessary.
Tutoring Location: I prefer to tutor in a public place, such as a local library when possible. I do understand that parents do work, and so some students may have difficulties getting to these places, so this can be negotiable when necessary.
I typically respond to emails, phone calls, and text messages after 5 pm M-F and all day on the weekends. Please do not be concerned if you do not hear from me during normal business hours! Toni is an outstanding tutor and has worked with both of my children in math studies. She is able to break down math into understandable portions which helps children grasp the concepts.
Toni, Thank you so much for helping my daughter she has greatly improved with her math! Would highly recommend you to anyone!
What a difference one session can make! Toni's explanations made everything much clearer. Already my son is beginning to improve.
Toni's teaching style was a perfect match for my son's needs. She expertly explained everything and gave him the knowledge and confidence he was lacking to succeed in college.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
