We have only had two tutor sessions so far but my son has really shown a connection with Mary Beth. She is very patient and has a good game plan to get my son on track. Really looking forward to future sessions and seeing my son's improvement.
Mary Beth was punctual and had a good rapport with our grand daughter right away. Seems patient and thorough. Highly recommended, especially for child weak in reading and/or math.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a Connecticut state certified elementary teacher(K-6) with a Master's degree in Education. I can assist your student with all of their needs, including Language Arts (Reading, Grammar, Phonics, Writing, etc.), Math, Science and Social Studies. In addition to being knowledgeable in the subject areas, I have received training in strategies, which means I will make the necessary effort so that your student learns in a way best suited to his or her learning style.
In addition, I have received training in reading remediation, and have achieved measurable, positive results. Your student will be instructed so that they learn to read with accuracy and for meaning. I have worked in suburban and urban school districts including teaching students for whom English is a second language.
Reading requires that students can identify letters and sounds automatically. I will assess your student’s knowledge of letters and corresponding sounds first thing, and address deficits through activities most effective for the student’s learning style.
When that step is complete, the student and I will move on to phonemes…the familiar chunks that letters form. By choosing appropriately leveled text, the student will look for familiar chunks in words as they begin reading. We will also explore phonetic awareness which is so important to the students ability to become proficient readers, writers, and spellers.
