Our 11th grade boy had trouble adjusting to his academics. Then along came Steve. He was limitless in patience and was persistent in having our child learn and understand both simple and difficult concepts. He truly provided the impetus our child needed to be motivated in school and thusly helped him earn high honors status this year. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was born with ADD, but earned a B.S. in Multi-Discipline Engineering and later, an MBA, despite my learning problems because of ADD, while learning to leverage the out-of-the-box thinking that's a major strength of ADD. Working in classroom and private environments, and onsite with adult colleagues at work, I've helped students from grade school through college age, and in the workforce, leverage the strengths, and cope with the problems, people with ADD/ADHD encounter. When working with students with ADD/ADHD, I emphasize structure and repetition, but leave room for individual creativity. Drawing from my own personal experiences, and from helping others with ADD/ADHD, I've amassed a "toolbox" of techniques and resources (including books by Kathleen Nadeau, and Gabor Mate'), nutrition solutions (Marcia Zimmerman), and online resources (like add.org and ldonline.org) which have proven helpful to people with ADD/ADHD.

Prior to earning my MBA in 2004, I had already functioned in roles ranging from Assistant to the Director, to Team Lead, and all of these roles involved working with financials and other "business" functions (budgeting, resources and assets, and overhead accounting). Curricula for my MBA cemented my understanding of skills acquired in the "business" tasks I was assigned, as well as providing me new skills, which subsequent bosses have leveraged, at firms where I've worked. I am confident in my abilities to help students with their Business learning needs, and currently tutor a college-level student with her Accounting course.
Drawing from 45 years' experience in Industry, with input and feedback from Career Professionals in many walks of Life, I use Career Development techniques, books, and online resources to help a person find the right job, and develop a "Life Plan" that grows and changes with them, so they are
equipped to progress through every stage of their Career. My Career Development method can be used by anyone, and I've taught it to High Schoolers, seasoned veterans, and stay-at-home parents, with equal success.

I have programmed in both old and new languages as a Software Engineer, at companies
like EDS/Unigraphics (now Siemens), Hewlett Packard, Pratt & Whitney, and Boeing. I
currently offer my Computer Programming skills to firms as a Consultant or Contract Software
As a Professional Musician and Music Instructor, I use Ear Training every day. I use Ear Training techniques to transcribe songs from their recordings, if/or when the sheet music is unavailable. I also, use Ear Training techniques to exercise my "ear", so that I am able to identify missed notes, intonation problems, and incorrect harmonizations while I am teaching. I am a firm believer in the efficacy and utility of Ear Training, for Music students and Music Professionals, alike.
I earned a B.S. in Engineering, then later in life, an MBA. Working one-on-one with youngsters in the K-6 age group is one of the greatest pleasures I enjoy, as a Tutor. I learned long ago, that I simply don't function as I like to, in the classroom environment, with students of this age group, and so I focus on providing instruction in a private setting. I always require another adult (parent or authorized guardian) to be present, during each session, and will allow other siblings to be present, as long as they don't detract from the learning environment. I have taught sibling pairs and twins, but even then, my approach is to treat each student as an individual, because that's what they are, no matter how they dress, look, or act. I want to give each student the fair opportunity they deserve, so if you have special circumstances that need to be considered, I invite you to address them with me. My goal is to help your student(s) get involved in a learning adventure that will last them the rest of their life.
I use General Music appreciation daily. As a Professional Musician and Music Instructor, I continually apply the principles of General Music appreciation to my work. I use General Music appreciation principles to identify styles of Music from around the World, assess their applicability to the music I am using or working on, and to understand the social, cultural, and demographic settings from which the Music derives. I also use the principles of General Music appreciation for the sheer enjoyment of the songs I listen to, and use, and always happy to share these same principles with people who desire to increase their appreciation of General Music.
I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Multi-Discipline Engineering (Mechanical/Structural, Nuclear, Civil, and Chemical) and have pursued a career in Engineering. My Mechanical Engineering background includes work at many major firms, including Boeing, Hamilton Sundstrand, HRTextron (now Woodward HRT), and the Jet Propulsion Laboratories. During that time I've learned how to create and customize many MS Outlook features, including email accounts and folders, and to create handling "rules" that enable a user to manage their email efficiently.

I studied Music History at the collegiate level, and am fully acquainted with the History of Western Music, from pre-Gregorian chant through Contemporary ("20th Century") styles. I have studied the 4 periods of Western Music (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary), the composers which typify each period, and their music. I am proficient with both Jazz and Classical Music Theory, and am able to relate the music from these genres to their underlying theoretical bases. I regularly perform music from both of these genres, publicly. I have also studied the History of World Music, and have performed music from other countries and cultures, including Indian, Japanese, and Latin American.
Instruction using Phonics was the way I learned to read and write English, back in the early 60-s. Since then, Phonics have proven their worth countless times, with those learning to read and write English. When teaching in the adult classroom environment, I use the Phonics resources approved by the school or business. When I tutor privately, I use a different resource for grades 1 - 5 than for my Grades 6-12 and adult learners, but all are available online, so my students can continue their Phonics work at home, between sessions with me.

Since the age of 11, I have used my Public Speaking skills in Civic, Scholastic, Industrial, and Religious settings. I've addressed the United States Congress in years past, and most recently, the General Assembly of the United Nations. I teach the basics of Public Speaking to my learners, as well as suggesting organizations (like Toastmasters), and opportunities, like Church and School forums, where students can gain practice in their Public Speaking.
I am a lay Minister and have served as an Associate Pastor in a number of churches where I have also preached, led Bible Studies, and performed with their Worship Teams. I understand that "religion" takes on different meanings for people. When I teach Religion, I provide the learner an impartial, factual, and unbiased assessment of the major Religions in the World today. I attempt to be as complete and fair with each Religion as I can be, so that my personal beliefs do not interfere with the facts about each Religion.
I studied Songwriting ("Music Composition") at the collegiate level. Before that, when I was
only 17, one of my first songs was used for the Love Theme of a Hollywood movie. Since then, I have written songs and themes for TV shows, other movies, and TV commercials. I have written or co-written songs for major performers and bands. I am currently doing Songwriting for the professional music group I perform with.
In High School, I mentored fellow students' study skills to help them achieve scholastic standing(s) they didn't think they could learn. In college, I worked on campus as the Self-Paced Learning Units Lab Assistant, where I regularly helped underclassmen develop learning skills to assist their completion of SPLU Lab modules. After graduation, I created and taught CAD courses for Boeing, McDonnell Douglas, and other Industry leaders, assisting students with overcoming their learning difficulties by teaching them the study skills they needed, so they could complete my courses.
More recently, I applied my study skills to earn an MBA.
