About Chelsea

As a certified 2nd grade elementary teacher I am familiar with current teaching styles and techniques as well as state standards and expectations of students currently in elementary school. I use strategies in my classroom to improve mathematical foundations such as number sense, place value, addition, subtraction, ways to make ten and many more. I also teach reading skills that improve students' reading and writing skills. I collaborate with my colleagues of all grades and am familiar with the expectations of elementary school students.

I graduated from Sacred Heart University with a Master of Arts in Teaching: Elementary Education in May of 2015. My variety of educational practices has prepared me to be an effective and passionate tutor. My Bachelor of Arts in Human Development and Family Studies from the University of Connecticut allows me to understand how children's developmental phases impact education.

As well as being a 2nd grade teacher, I was a kindergarten teacher last year. Prior to my first year of teaching last year, I completed a year long internship in grades K-4, a ten week student teaching experience in 3rd grade and a position as a special education teaching assistant. I have become familiar with the curriculum and techniques used in kindergarten through fifth grade classrooms. As well, I have nine years of tutoring experience in all subjects with elementary, middle school and high school students. I am passionate about education and find ways to always make learning fun. My enthusiasm will give your child confidence in their academic abilities.

I am flexible with days and times for tutoring and I would be honored to work with your child and look forward to hearing from you!

Thank you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a Master of Arts in Teaching: Elementary Education. I am a kindergarten teacher, I completed a year long internship in a K-4 school, a ten week student teaching experience in 3rd grade and a special education teaching assistant position in kindergarten. I align my lessons to Common Core standards. I have nine years of elementary tutoring experience.

Elementary Math

As a kindergarten teacher I am familiar with the teaching strategies used in math today. I know how to set up the building blocks for mathematical thinking. In elementary school I was in the gifted math program and thoroughly enjoy teaching math!

Handwriting

As a kindergarten teacher I teacher pre-writing and writing techniques. This includes teaching children the appropriate way to hold a pencil and form all letters. Techniques used include pre-writing stroke practices, highlighter tracing, 3-dimensional letter tracing cards, iPad apps, practice and specific wording to create connections between letters. As well, workbooks can be used to improve handwriting.

Phonics

As a kindergarten teacher one of my main focuses is phonemic awareness and phonics. I teacher children every day strategies to advance their reading abilities. Techniques for practice include blending, phonemic awareness practices, reading to self, reading to others, listening to reading, close reading, guided reading, word work and so much more! I am familiar with teaching phonics at K-4 level through my student teaching and internship experiences.

Praxis

I have taken and passed all sections of the Praxis 2 exam for elementary education. I received a passing score on the language arts and reading, math, social studies and science subsections. Specifically, I scored a perfect score in the mathematics section. As well, I took graduate level courses to help me prepare for the Praxis test. I have become a certified teacher based on my Praxis scores. I am familiar with techniques and study materials for the exam.
