About Lee

I have been providing students in Fairfield and Westchester counties with patient, responsive, and insightful math, science, and test prep tutoring for over 14 years. I have over 20 years of teaching experience with a focus on conceptual clarity and individual and small group teaching. I have excellent communication skills, good rapport with students, excellent personal test scores, and a solid record of student success.

I offer full service tutoring. My role includes listening carefully to parents and students.

Through listening and observing I determine the student’s strengths and weaknesses. I present patient, insightful explanations of concepts and their applications that are tailored to the student, filling in gaps and building on the student’s existing understanding.

The time I spend with the student is only part of my job; my role in academic tutoring involves familiarizing myself completely with the student’s curriculum and teacher expectations on a lesson by lesson basis. Test prep tutoring involves the ongoing development of a personalized curriculum at the correct level of difficulty for each of the concepts that appears on the test. I prepare carefully for each session and afterwards record observations about the student’s progress which form the basis of an emailed summary to the parent.

My work experience includes tutoring for a highly selective Manhattan agency where I revised SAT Math teaching materials and was asked to train new tutor recruits. To be considered for employment, tutors had to have test scores in the 99th percentile. My personal scores exceed that standard, with a perfect score of 1600 on the SAT (top tenth of 1%) and on three SAT Subject Tests - Math 2, Physics, and Writing (which was formerly a separate SAT Subject Test). As an independent tutor I strive to continue to offer better academic and test prep tutoring.

Other qualifications include a perfect score (200/200) on the ETS Praxis II Mathematics Content Knowledge teacher exam. Many states, including Connecticut, require this exam. It is worth noting that, according to official ETS statistics, typically 75% of math teacher candidates who take the exam score 160 or less on a scale that runs from 100 (lowest possible score) to 200 points. Translating that to a more familiar 0 to 100 point scale, 75% of prospective math teachers score 60 or less on a test in which this tutor scored 100. In most states candidates must achieve a 60 ("160" on the official scale) to get certification, so obviously many retake the test. But 60 on a 0 to 100 scale is still far from math content mastery. The same observations apply to the Praxis Physics Content Knowledge test. Help from a tutor with full content mastery can make a big difference.

Further qualifications include advanced degrees in physics, extensive grad and undergrad math study, and extensive math and physics teaching at both the college and high school level.

I am on the student's side. I will examine critically everything from the course textbook to class notes and handouts and the grading of tests and quizzes. As an experienced college and high school physics instructor I am able to provide a deeper insight into experimental procedures, results, and sources of error. I help students to produce high-quality, well-written lab reports with interesting, incisive discussions and conclusions.

While test preparation involves some attention to test format, content, and recurring question types, a goal in all tutoring is to impart mathematical and scientific insight and reasoning skill that will continue to serve the student in college and beyond. It is the path to true confidence and peak performance.

Please note that my hourly rate for in-person tutoring is lower when the length of a tutoring session is longer (see rate structure below). Because I have a solid mastery of a wide range of school science and math subjects, as well as test prep, I encourage families to consider covering more than one subject, and including more than one sibling, where applicable, on any tutoring visit. Longer sessions can include breaks, which I do not include in the total time, and for which I therefore do not charge the client.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have over 100 hours of experience tutoring and teaching Algebra 1 This experience includes teaching 7th, 8th and 9th graders in one-to-one and small group settings at the Tutoring School in Manhattan. I have also achieved a perfect score on the ETS Praxis II Math Content teacher candidate exam, which covers Algebra 1, among other topics.

Algebra 2

I have both classroom and one-to-one experience in teaching Algebra 2 topics, for a total of over 60 hours. In algebra 2 the student begins to develop more fluency with the symbols and syntax of symbolic equations. My mastery of Algebra 2 content is evidenced by a perfect score on the ETS Praxis II Math Content teacher candidate exam, which tests knowledge of all lower and upper school math subjects, including Algebra 2.

Calculus

I have over 100 hours of experience tutoring Calculus, including AP Calculus BC, college intro calculus, and advanced calculus. I help the student to master the procedures and also to gain insight into their meaning. I obtained a perfect score on the ETS Praxis II Math Content teacher candidate exam, which tests knowledge of all school math subjects, including Calculus. My formal preparation includes over 100 hours of grad and undergrad math study including courses in graduate level analysis and differential geometry.

Physics

I have over 12 years of physics teaching and tutoring experience, both in the classroom and one-to-one, including AP Physics with calculus. I hold both a Master's degree in physics and achieved a personal score of 800 on the SAT Physics Subject Test.

Precalculus

I have over 100 hours of experience tutoring the broad range of subjects included under the heading Precalculus. In some ways it is more challenging for students than Calculus, because so many unrelated math concepts are encountered. In contrast, Calculus is conceptually unified. My readiness to teach the topics of Precalculus is in part indicated by a perfect score on the ETS Praxis II Math Content teacher candidate exam, which covers all school math subjects.

SAT Math

I have over 12 years of SAT math prep tutoring experience, including test prep for a premier Manhattan tutoring agency where I revised their SAT math teaching manual and trained new tutor recruits. I have perfect personal scores on the SAT and on the SAT Math 2 and physics subject tests, and an excellent record of student successes.

Off to a good start — Lee has met with my son two times to help him prepare for his physics and pre-calculus mid-term exams. While there is still a lot to cover, Lee is patiently filling in the holes for my son and giving him good tips on the best use of his time. ...
