About Michael

I work at and enjoy teaching mathematics. I have real experience with the difficulties of studying it, and how to overcome them. I emphasize the necessity of knowing the reasons for a particular method as well as its performance. I teach from arithmetic through the calculus.

As for my credentials, I hold a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from MIT, and a PhD in Mathematics from NYU. I have taught undergraduate courses including Mathematical Thinking, Elementary Mathematics from an Advanced Standpoint, College Algebra, Pre-calculus, Calculus, Finite Mathematics, Numerical Analysis, and Algebra. I dearly like teaching arithmetic, geometry and trigonometry. For business use, I have extensive experience with fixed income securities calculations.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Differential Equations

As an undergraduate I took a course "Advanced Calculus for Engineers" which covered this material. In graduate school I took both ordinary and partial differential equations. I have experience tutoring the undergraduate material.

Finance

I spent two years in the Municipal Finance Dept of Salomon Bros. I have extensive experience with fixed income securities calculations.

Geometry

My score on the NY State Geometry Regents was 98.

Linear Algebra

I took Linear Algebra in graduate school. Aside from the course I have read Halmos, Finite Dimensional Vector Spaces. I have used the subject's application in regression calculations at work.

Logic

I have been teaching Mathematical Thinking,a course which covers elementary logic, for several years at the college level. The course covers the elementary connectives and quantifiers - and, or, not, if-then, for all, there exists. Several methods of proof - the several forms for the conditional converse, inverse, contra-positive.

Praxis

I took the Praxis exam on 7/21/2004. I received the following scores: Math: Content knowledge, 195; C-PPST: Reading, 186; C-PPST: Writing, 179; and C-PPST: Mathematics, 190.

Series 7

When I worked at Goldman Sachs I had this license. When I worked at Salomon Brothers I had this license. When worked at Merrill Lynch I had this license.
