In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified for this position as a tutor because I have an excellent rapport with young children and I am very knowledgeable about a young child's growth and development. I have been a kindergarten teacher for 16 years. In 1985 I wrote developed and implemented a pre- k program that I taught in a Catholic school in Yonkers, New York. After this, I received my masters degree in elementary education with a minor in reading. Following this, I got a job teaching kindergarten in the public schools in Darien, Ct and continued on teaching for 15 years successfully. I left after these 15 years to raise my children in Vermont. After they were in elementary school, I wrote a French program for 4,5, and 6 year olds. This program was a hands on creative program that taught kids French vocabulary, French songs, exposed them to French art and beautiful children's books. I taught this at a private school called Sugarwood school in Rutland Vermont. Ten years later I am back in Westport, CT. I was working at a child development center for a while, where I had to write Core Three curriculum and lessons of my own for my class every week using three Core three strands, Bloom's taxonomy and Benchmarks specific to state requirements. I planned creative lessons that involved the 4 and 5 year olds in cooking, music, math, science, writing, and reading. I assessed children using the results of the Diebles assessment scale. I planned lessons that helped children with the skills they needed to improve on, based on their individual scores. I speak French, I sing, and I skate. I have nannied and tutored math and reading for two years, when living in Vermont. I own 230 children's books. I LOVE TEACHING !
