Over the past five years, I have been a public middle school and high school English teacher. I also have experience working with upper elementary students. I am currently a middle school English teacher in Westport, and I have also worked as an English teacher in Danbury and Avon.
As an English teacher, I've learned that every student learns differently. I am committed to creating a positive tutoring environment for your child where he or she will feel comfortable asking questions, thinking critically and growing as a reader and writer. Together, we will work to clearly identify learning objectives for your child, and I will tutor your child in a way that suits his or her learning style. For a student struggling with grammatical concepts, this may mean kicking a soccer ball back and forth in order to understand the difference between direct and indirect objects. For another student who struggles with reading comprehension, this may mean diagramming the elements of plot, paraphrasing non-fiction articles to create understanding, or using different annotation strategies.
Every student should have the opportunity to reach his or her best. Specialized one-on-one instruction helps students to view tasks that were once daunting as doable and maybe even enjoyable! Generally, I work with students on homework assignments or class projects. This could mean spending time generating a thesis for an upcoming paper, proofreading a rough draft, or organizing a book report. If there is additional time after going over homework and preparing for upcoming tests, I’m happy to use supplemental materials to help your student excel!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught middle school English for two years and public speaking is part of our core curriculum. Students learn the elements of persuasive speaking and how to understand their audience. I teach my students how to integrate multimedia and visual displays in their presentations in order to strengthen their claims and engage their audience. Students also learn the importance of supporting their claims with evidence and previewing their main points for the audience in an organized manner.
I have worked as an eighth grade English teacher and tutored many of my students after school. These study sessions were held to review material for upcoming quizzes and tests. I taught my students study strategies and mnemonic devices so that they could become more independent. In addition to holding study sessions, I taught students how to proofread their papers independently by going through a "grammar checklist." All of this experience has prepared me to help the students I tutor develop strong and effective study skills.
