I have a B.S. and Ed.M. from Boston University and have completed more than 40 hours of post graduate work at Fairfield University, Oslo (Norway) University, Uppsala (Sweden) University and City College, N.Y. My teaching and substituting experience have covered grades K-12 including the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. I taught grade 7 Social Studies at Saxe Junior High School in New Canaan before joining the international faculty at the Antwerp International School. At AIS I taught Medieval History, European History, US History and a 20th Century European History course. Additional responsibilities included Senior Class Advisor and Model UN Advisor When the school joined IB my assignment was modified to concentrate on the two year IB European History sequence and College Counseling. During my overseas tenure I did private tutoring concentrating on essay and research skills, history review, and college counseling for local students interested in going to college in the US. I was very successful and won an outstanding teacher award from the University of Chicago.
In 1986 the IB asked me to become an Assistant Examiner marking exams and the required Extended Essay.
Since returning to the US I have done extensive substituting and tutoring in the local area. I have concentrated on special needs students aw well as reading and writing skills in elementary and secondary, both public and private schools. I am still engaged by the IB to mark Extended Essays and to remark work by examiners who have failed the moderation process. I have traveled around the world and get on well with students of diverse backgrounds and skills. It has been a source of great pleasure to keep up with former students using social media. I am well versed in many subjects and know the local area well. Clearly I am an ideal tutor for your child. Arline is working with my son on college choices that will be a good fit, essays, resumes etc. She has an unbelievable knowledge of this field.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I taught American History at the middle school and high school level for more than 25 years in the US and Belgium
I was in charge of college counseling at the Antwerp International School for ten years. I gave presentations at the College Board Workshop in Chapel Hill and at Northwestern. I placed students in colleges in the US, UK, Belgium, Canada, Netherlands etc. I got scholarships for international students and helped students with college essays. I also carried out independent college advising
I taught European History at an international school for 25 years. This included Medieval History, 18th and 19th century history as well as the 20th century including the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. IB is a rigorous 3 year program that is taught at more than 3,000 schools around the globe. Additionally I marked European History Exams for the IB for 25 years.
I substituted for 14 years for special needs students and did a lot of one on one work. I was in demand as a special needs sub. My credentials in ESL, reading, vocabulary, and writing make me a natural to work with students with learning difficulties at the elementary level. I have produced excellent results with these students and received a lot of praise from cooperating teachers.
