My name is Jessica, and I am a private tutor and CT certified classroom English teacher with experience teaching and tutoring K-12, college, and adult students. My love of teaching comes from a passion for reading and writing and a compassion for helping others become confident and successful learners.
I am a certified English teacher with nine years of classroom experience in middle school and high school settings. In addition to working in the classroom setting, I have experience tutoring students in college level literature and writing courses, all levels of middle and high school English, including advanced and AP courses, as well as 4th and 5th graders in reading, writing, and vocabulary. I also have experience tutoring and preparing students for the SAT, ACT, ISEE, and SSAT verbal, reading comprehension, and writing tests. Additionally, I am also certified and experienced in teaching students with learning disabilities in both a co-taught and resource room learning environment. I have received extensive training in the Columbia University readers and writers workshop model and the Orton Gillingham method.
My wealth of knowledge and experience teaching students of diverse cultural backgrounds and various learning abilities has made me an expert at tailoring my instructional approach and strategies to meet the needs of each individual learner.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have extensive experience tutoring students for the lower level, middle level, and upper level verbal, reading comprehension, and writing portions of the ISEE.
As a tenured middle school English teacher with certification and experience teaching language arts, special education, as well as preparation for standardized tests, I have a wide variety of tools and strategies to help students develop their individualized study skills. I use learning styles inventories to help students pinpoint their learning type and use their learning strengths to develop the habits and routines necessary to be successful.
