About Jacob

I am a college graduate with 8 years of tutoring experience in biology and writing. I earned by bachelor’s degree in Biology (double minor in Psychology & Scientific Writing) from Manhattanville College and graduated with honors in biology.

I will be attending medical school beginning August 2017 and I currently work as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) for a volunteer EMS service.

I have worked with students from grades 6-12 as well as college and graduate students. I simply love tutoring. I find tutoring extremely fulfilling, I derive great satisfaction when I know that I have helped someone grasp a concept they have been struggling with and made it “click.” I also have experience tutoring individuals with various learning disabilities. I am a very patient individual and I give you my assurance that I will work as hard as I can to provide you with the help you need to reach your goals.

During my undergraduate career I had the opportunity to gain extensive experience in research, primarily in the area of biology, biopsychology / neuroscience, and psychopharmacology. In college, I also served as a Supplemental Instructor / T.A. and lead review sessions in a classroom-lecture-type format for a psychology course on drug use and abuse that was rooted more in neurophysiology and biopsychology.

I have been a writing tutor since high school. As an undergraduate I worked as a writing / English composition tutor. The student body at my college was very diverse, which allowed me to gain much experience working with students who did not learn English as their first language.

I always put my best effort into helping the students that I tutor. I am confident in my abilities and I look forward to assisting you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anatomy

I have been a tutor for biology courses, including human anatomy and physiology, in high school all the way through college. In addition to having already taken and tutored anatomy and physiology in high school and college, I am also an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). My position as an EMT enables me to incorporate clinical applications of anatomy and physiology. I find that incorporating clinical applications of anatomy and physiology engages students, as many students find the subject material more engaging when supplemented with a clinical component and real world applications.

Biology

I have been a tutor for high school biology courses, including anatomy and physiology and A.P. Biology. In college I served as a tutor for several biology courses including Principles of Biology I, Principles of Biology II, Anatomy & Physiology, and other related courses. Other biology courses I have taken include Microbiology, Infectious diseases, Genetics, Nutrition, and other courses.

As someone who has a background in biology and tutoring experience, I am aware of effective methods one can employ to develop their study skills in this area depending on their learning style.

Macintosh

I am proficient in both Macintosh and windows operating systems. I used a PC with windows operating system as a child and made the adjustment to Apple commuters and the Apple operating system mid-way through high school. It is not an easy transition, however, I am confident I can help you through it and provide you with useful information, skills, knowledge, and techniques you will need to utilize your apple computer to its full extent.

Additionally, I am the Technology Officer for Weston Volunteer Emergency Medical Services. One of the many responsibilities I have as the Technology officer is working with Apple products and teaching, assisting, and familiarizing members with our technology. This requires me to have an intimate and advanced understanding of Macintosh products, how to use them, and most importantly, how to teach others to use them in a productive and efficient manner.

Microbiology

I have been a tutor for high school biology courses, including anatomy and physiology and A.P. Biology. In college I served as a tutor for several biology courses including Principles of Biology I, Principles of Biology II, Anatomy & Physiology, Freshman Seminar on Infectious Disease, and other related courses.
I am also an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). My position as an EMT enables me to incorporate my clinical experience as it pertains to Microbiology. I find that incorporating clinical experience related to microbiology engages students, as many students find the subject material more engaging when supplemented with a clinical component and real world applications.

I took Microbiology in college and did very well. I have not tutored Microbiology as much as I have tutored other biology courses, however, I am confident that with my experience I will be able to assist you.
Other biology courses I have taken include Infectious diseases, Genetics, Nutrition, and other courses.

As someone who has a background in biology and tutoring experience, I am aware of effective methods one can employ to develop their study skills in this area depending on their learning style.

Pharmacology

I have extensive experience in research, specifically in the area of psychopharmacology, which I gained by conducting a study I designed for my senior thesis: “Effects of (S-)propranolol in a Binge Model of Cocaine Administration During Adolescence on Reducing Anxiety-Like Behaviors in Rats.” I have experience conducting pharmacological studies using the rodent model. During my undergraduate career I served as a guest lecturer, Supplemental Instructor / T.A. and lead review sessions in a classroom-lecture-type format for a psychology course on drug use and abuse that was rooted in psychopharmacology, neurophysiology and biopsychology. I am intimately familiar with the fundamental aspects of pharmacology such as mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, dose response curves, drug interactions, receptor physiology, drug tolerance (cellular, behavioral, and metabolic/induction tolerance). I am knowledgeable about the pharmacology of psychoactive drugs, drugs of abuse, analgesics, psychotropic drugs / pharmacotherapeutic intervention for the treatment of mental illness, and various pharmacotherapeutic interventions used in palliative care and pain management. As an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) I am familiar with various drugs used in emergency medicine, their clinical indications, mechanism of action, etc. My position as an EMT also enables me to incorporate clinical applications of pharmacology. I find that incorporating clinical applications of pharmacology engages students. Related coursework includes: microbiology, infectious diseases, drug use and abuse, abnormal psychology, and the physiological basis of behavior.

Physiology

I have been a tutor for biology courses, including human anatomy and physiology, in high school all the way through college. I have taken anatomy and physiology in high school and in college. I have also served as a tutor for the course in high school and college. I am also an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). My position enables me to incorporate clinical examples of anatomy and physiology. In my experience I have found that incorporating clinical applications of these types of subjects engages students, as many students find the subject material more engaging when supplemented with a clinical component and real world applications.

Proofreading

I have extensive experience as a writing tutor that I have gained over approximately 8 years of working as a tutor in this subject. A "writing tutor" is somewhat of an all encompassing term, as the tasks of a writing tutor include proofreading, however, they also include brains storming ideas, creating outlines, syntax, diction, vocabulary, helping students find appropriate sources, and a myriad of other tasks. When a student approaches me and asks for my assistance in proofreading their work, I think of an individual that already has a draft of their work and simply wants a second set of eyes to look over it for any potential errors. I am a firm believer that even the best writers should seek out a qualified individual to proofread a draft of their work. Whenever possible, I ask a colleague to proofread my work, as it ensures quality. When one works on an essay for a long time it becomes increasingly difficult to find errors, as the writer becomes so familiar with their work. A fresh set of eyes and a new perspective can make a huge difference. That is what I can offer you should you request my services. I am confident that given my skills, experience, and training, I can work with you to make a stellar essay.

During my undergraduate career, one of my minors was in scientific writing. As an undergraduate I was employed by the writing center at my college. My college was very diverse, as a large portion of the student body was comprised of international students. By helping these students I gained extensive experience in working with students that struggle with english composition due to the fact that they did not learn english as their first language. I am also very experienced working with students who struggle with learning disabilities and / or special needs.

Every student is unique and I cater my approach to assisting students accordingly based on their needs. Generally, my approach to proofreading is to identify the student's goals for their paper, receive the document and correct it digitally using track changes to accommodate students who wish to work with an online tutor. I then follow up once I have corrected the paper, go over reoccurring errors with the student, and advise them further. Depending on the student, I am comfortable receiving the document electronically, correcting it using tack changes, and working with the student online after their essay has been corrected. WyzAnt's online tutoring platform allows for this and it is more efficient then having the student wait while I proofread their paper.

I have received awards on my work, including honorable mention for my essay "Focusing on the Big Picture: An Analysis of the Social Impact of the Use of Psychotropic Medication in Pediatric Psychiatry" and another one of my works is in the process of publication to a scholarly journal.

Psychology

I minored in psychology as an undergraduate. In college I served as a psychology tutor and tutored courses including Fundamentals of Psychology, Abnormal psychology (pathopsychology), The Physiological Basis of Behavior, and Drug Use and Abuse.

I also served as a guest lecturer, Supplemental Instructor / T.A. and lead review sessions in a classroom-lecture-type format for a psychology course on drug use and abuse that was rooted more in neurophysiology and biopsychology.

During my undergraduate career I had the opportunity to gain extensive research experience in the area of psychology, biopsychology / neuroscience, and psychopharmacology by conducting a study for my senior thesis: “Effects of (S-)propranolol in a Binge Model of Cocaine Administration During Adolescence on Reducing Anxiety-Like Behaviors in Rats.” I have experience with experimental psychology and conducting research using the rodent model.

Although I can effectively tutor psychology courses at the college level, I specialize in tutoring areas of psychology that overlap with biology (biopsychology).
Related coursework: Statistics, Writing Review Articles in Psychology.

Very knowledgeable. Explains material easily.

In first session, Jacob taught my son diffusion and osmosis. He took the exam in biology two days later and got an A! He was able to apply what he learned more easily, but also, his confidence soared!
