Language and Literacy birth through sixth grade (Master's)
Hello. I'm Nadine and I have been enjoying all of my teaching career in the primary grades. It has been a great and rewarding experience to nurture children in the learning environment in grades prek, K, 2nd, and 3rd. While the classrooms are self-contained my passion is literacy and that is where I focused my Master's degree as well as intense professional development. I later became a mentor teacher in a teachers' learning community in Bridgeport. My experience in working with so many children over the years has given me the opportunity to also expand my knowledge of ways to help individuals learn strategies for reading and math. This is why building confidence is most important to me. I've seen struggling students not like a particular subject light up when they "got it." And while everything doesn't need to be a child's favorite or straight As I DO believe as adults we can work together to see children engaged, happy, and learning.
When working with a child I like to know his/her interests, favorite colors, and favorites or activities enjoyed. This helps me to choose books from the library and other working materials that will be more enjoyable to use. Please understand that our first tutoring session is a time for your child and I to get to know each other. It also provides me with an opportunity to identify strengths and prepare objectives for tutoring sessions.
I completed the Language and Literacy program for my Master's in Education at Fordham University and passed the New York State Literacy teacher certificate program. I continued optional seminars and workshops in Literacy to include best practices in my classrooms and did not 'stop' improving. When asked, I was humbled to have principals and teachers visit the classroom. And I eventually became a mentor teacher for literacy- instruction, building and organizing libraries, mini lessons, to them-with them-by themselves, strategies, read alouds, shared reading, guided reading, independent reading.
I include concepts about print as well to know letters, words, left to right, syllables, beginning and end sounds. Assessing for known letter identification and sounds, teaching unknowns as we go and reading to child, with child, and alongside child.
My lengthy, continued experience and expertise at what I love qualify me as an excellent tutor.
I have a full resume and letters of recommendation from school principals. Aside from my experience, love for working with children, and sharing in their joy, I also bring maturity and professionalism when I come to tutor your child.
Thank you for your time. I look forward to the opportunity of working with your family.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
