About Cheryl

I am a communications professional with a love for sharing my knowledge with others. Whether in the form of teaching or mentoring, I enjoy guiding students along their journey to become the happiest and most accomplished versions of themselves. Equipped with a bachelor’s degree from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, and a Master of Arts in Integrated Marketing Communications from Emerson College, I am passionate about helping students and professionals sharpen their skills and confidence in all matters related to literacy and communication.

My teaching and tutoring experience is varied. For the past 5 years, I’ve worked with students ranging in age from 3 to 68 years old, at the primary, elementary, middle school, and community college level. Most recently, I provided individual tutoring, as well as small group phonics and reading instruction to elementary school students. Additionally, I am a skilled public speaking coach and adjunct instructor.

Command of the English language is a fundamental skill that opens the gateway to academic and career opportunities. I know how important it is to use different learning strategies so that students are empowered and achieve success. Learning is not a cookie-cutter, but uniquely individual process. I am consistently relentless in finding new ways to make subjects come alive. I've been told my creative perspectives and methods of simplifying confusing material cause frequent "Now I get it!" moments.

One very important key to academic success is knowing how to approach a subject based on the course assignments or learning objectives. I help students create study-plans based on their strengths while incorporating strategies to minimize or eliminate weaknesses.

You’ll certainly discover that learning can be fun, and "light bulbs" will turn on, when I help you see how what you're learning relates to you, how you can use the information, and what it could mean for your future. All of this will happen as I support you with individualized feedback, specific corrective actions, and lots of laughter along the way.

Whether it's improving grades, getting ready for a test, beefing up your skills for college, or preparing for a business meeting, I'm here to help. Let’s get started!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I am a native English speaker with excellent experience and credentials. I have worked for more than 16 years as a communications professional in academic, government, and non-profit environments. During that time, I served as a public relations liaison, media spokesperson, speechwriter, and speech coach. Writing was, and continues to be, a primary professional responsibility. I love literature and creative writing. In my spare time, I write essays and poetry.

Phonics

For more than a year, I have provided small group and individual phonics instruction. Students were presented with age and developmentally appropriate materials and literature to facilitate learning. In addition to modeling letter sounds, repetition, and rhyme, I employed synthetic, analytic, and analogy based techniques. These strengthened each student's ability to make sound/ symbol connections, decode words, and recognize word patterns in combination with varying initial or ending sounds. Based on my experience, I am comfortable working with mainstream and special education populations.

Public Speaking

Since 2011, I have taught more than 220 students in 11 sections of COM 173 - Effective Public Speaking as an adjunct instructor at Manchester Community College (CT). Most recently, I've also taught classes at the University of Hartford. I have worked as a communications professional for more than 16 years in academic, government, and non-profit environments. Serving as a public relations liaison, media spokesperson, writer, speechwriter, and speech coach continue to be primary responsibilities.
