About Doug

I am new to tutoring, though the opportunities I've had to work one-on-one with students as a substitute teacher have been rewarding. I enjoy helping people of all ages, and I have a natural curiosity and desire to learn and to help others build on their knowledge and acquire new skills.

I taught Music Appreciation courses for two years (four semesters) at Capital Community College, covering the histories of European (classical) and African-American musics. I completed three semesters of African-American Music History classes, taught by the late jazz saxophonist Jackie McLean, at the University of Hartford. I have hosted jazz radio programs on a weekly basis, and programs featuring other styles of music, for more than 25 years over WWUH-FM, the University of Hartford radio station. I wrote concert reviews for Imprint Newspapers in the mid-to-late-1980s and for the Hartford Courant, 1989-93, and feature stories on music for Hartford Magazine.

For most of my professional life, I've worked as a writer. My experience has included more than a decade as a reporter and editor for community newspapers, magazines and websites. For several years, I translated information from highway engineers into press releases and copy for radio and newspaper ads and pamphlets, all part of a campaign to minimize travel delays due to construction. I've also done academic writing, including seminar papers and a master's thesis. I can assist students with any step in completing a writing/research assignment. I have high standards, but I am also patient and sympathetic by nature and a good listener.

My approach is generally task-oriented, to start by assisting the student with the assignment or challenge at-hand. That often entails going over the process involved in determining how to answer a question or complete an assignment, with the goal of preparing the student to tackle new tasks independently in the future. Naturally, input and feedback from a parent or student is welcome.

I look forward to hearing from you and to helping you or your child achieve success in their studies.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Music History

I taught Music Appreciation courses for two years (four semesters) at Capital Community College, covering the histories of European (classical) and African-American musics. I completed three semesters of African-American Music History classes, taught by the late jazz saxophonist Jackie McLean, at the University of Hartford. Spanish

I began studying Spanish a few years after earning my master's in communication. I had married a native speaker and also saw a command of Spanish as a potential professional asset, so I was highly motivated. Wanting to go beyond travelers' Spanish, I did coursework at Central Connecticut State University and Capital Community College, spent a month at the Colegio de España, in Salamanca, Spain, in a study-abroad program jointly sponsored by CCSU and SCSU, and spent two weeks in San José, Costa Rica, living with a local family and studying at the Instituto Centroamericano de Asuntos Internacionales. I have also visited Puerto Rico several times.
