About Nic

I have quite a bit of experience as a tutor, trainer, and teacher in variety of subjects. During my Junior and Senior years of college, I tutored college level algebra, calculus, physics, and electrical engineering courses, and I have been tutoring privately for the past few years. In the past 9 months I have been tutoring exclusively online while I travel the world with my girlfriend. I have visited over 15 countries all while helping American high school and college students with math and physics!

On paper, I have the qualifications to be a effective math and science tutor. I have a BS (3.9 GPA) and MS (3.7 GPA) in Electrical Engineering from ABET accredited universities along with four years of professional engineering experience. More importantly however, I work diligently to customize every tutoring session to each particular student's needs. While all students respond to different teaching techniques (and I have taught enough students to know when to adapt to different needs), the ultimate goal is to reinforce any student's existing knowledge and abilities in order to boost their confidence and interest in the subject. I really enjoy tutoring because there is always a point when a student makes a new connection and what previously seemed impossible is now second nature. That is always great to see!

In addition to academic and professional subjects, I am an accomplished guitarist. I am happy to give beginner to intermediate guitar lessons to students of all ages.

I will be available for online lessons until June (2017), at which point I will be available for lessons in the Greater New Haven area again. I sincerely look forward to hearing from any and all potential students or parents.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Electrical Engineering

I have an Electrical Engineering Degree with a 3.9 GPA from an ABET accredited University. I have tutored Circuit Theory 1 & 2, Electromagnetism, Power Systems, and Signal/Systems processing courses. In my experience, most students need help in the first semester of circuit theory (DC concepts, Kirchoff's laws, nodal/mesh analysis, linear components) and the second semester of circuit theory (AC concepts, frequency response, filter circuits, differential equations, basic power analysis). Both classes often require the use of MULTISIM or PSPICE for circuit simulation, and I have experience with both. Power Systems students tent to have trouble with the concept of three phase power, transformer configurations, and the per-unit system. Signal analysis and electromagnetism students tend to struggle with the heavy use of differential equations in wave theory (Wave equation, Maxwell's equations, Laplace transforms, etc.).

Guitar

I have played guitar for 13 years. I took formal lessons for two years, and I have been self taught since then. I have taught four students in the past five years. I am able to teach basic skills such as tuning, stringing, and maintenance. I am able to teach fingering drills, finger picking, open chords, bar chords, and other such skills. I also have experience with Jazz, Blues, and Rock improvisation. I have experience playing both acoustic and electric. I can read both sheet music and tablature. I am able to teach beginner to intermediate students.

Linear Algebra

I received a Mathematics minor as part of my Electrical Engineering degree. I've received A's in courses in linear algebra, complex analysis, and game theory as well as a MATLAB course that focused heavily on linear algebra topics. I have tutored students in linear algebra, MATLAB, and statics (mechanical engineering course that heavily rely's on Matrix multiplication). I have also used linear algebra topics in Power system analysis courses and my current career as a transmission planning engineer.

MATLAB

I have been using MATLAB for 4 years in my undergraduate and graduate education. I have used MATLAB for linear algebra, complex analysis, control systems, and power system analysis. I have a license to use the software, and I am able to tutor most undergraduate engineering and math courses that utilize the software as well as to help with specific issues.

Great tutor

Nic is a great tutor! He is excellent at making concepts clearer and is willing to try different ways so my child can get it. He has also worked with my child to better understand how to respond on quizzes and tests.
