As a physician and pediatrician I have years of experience working with children and adults. I currently tutor and mentor children at the grade-school and middle and high school levels. I am equally comfortable and able with adults. Being a competent reader and writer are the foundations for everything one does in school and I am a strong believer in supporting an individual's achievement in those areas to their highest ability. In addition to my medical degree I have a master's in English.
I am patient, have a good sense of humor and like children and teens - people in general - and work well, and enjoy my work with them. As a former psychotherapist, I know the value of building self-worth and self-confidence. I am sensitive to the student's psychological needs as we work together knowing this this pays off in increased learning and life success. The most productive and satisfying learning takes place within the context of a positive, trusting relationship.
I look forward to helping you or your child achieve the skills and self-confidence for which you hope. As a physician and pediatrician I have years of experience working with children and adults. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I'm a Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrician with 20 years experience working with children with ADD/ADHD and their parents medically and educationally including consultation with special education classroom teachers. I have published on the subject of effects of ADD/ADHD on learning.
I have worked for three years as a volunteer reading tutor. Students have been grades K-2. The have been both problem readers and those ahead of grade levels. I focus on helping the student to read with fluidity and expression while increasing comprehension. Writing and drawing may be used to supplement this effort. Especially at this level, learning takes place within the context of a positive, trusting, relationship. I work to build the student's self-confidence, sense of self-worth, and to help him or her discover the joy of being a good reader. I would like to have parents consult with teachers so they can obtain appropriate materials in order that all our efforts are complementary. I have also mentored children and teens (elementary thru High School) for the past several years.
