Middlebury College (Classical Languages)
New York University (MBA)
My college degree was in the Classics (Latin and Greek) (Phi Beta Kappa) from Middlebury College and after the conclusion of my business career, I am now ready to return to work in this field in my semi-retirement. My Latin skills have been recently refreshed by successfully tutoring my daughter through six years of high school and college Latin. I am fully versed in both the Wheelock and Cambridge approaches to teaching Latin.
My approach to tutoring would vary with each student with the objective of discovering where assistance is needed. Latin is an very complex language such that what a student struggles with will typically vary in each case. Nevertheless, the objective will be to achieve a proficiency in translation while at the same time developing an appreciation of the beauty of the language, Latin history, culture and relevancy to other subjects. So, a particular focus may emphasize vocabulary building, grammar, syntax or as basic as understanding how conjugations and declensions work.
While I chose not to pursue Latin as a career after college, there is no question in my mind that my Latin education was a key to my success in the business world where I quickly rose to high positions in finance with responsibility for all aspects of financial matters in major banks. These responsibilities also included management of hundreds of employees. I would bring a mature, responsible approach to the tutoring job and hopefully inspire students to higher aspirations in addition to better grades in Latin. Albert makes a great connection with the kids and knows the teachers in the WH schools and their methods well. He has been a great resource for us. I highly recommend Albert.
He taught me how to translate sentences using noun and verb conjugations, and helped me remember ways to remember the declension of nouns.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
