My first experience tutoring was when I was in the 3rd grade and waiting for the school bus to take us home. I decided then to use the waiting time productively by giving drawing lessons to the schoolmates willing to pay the grand total of three cents. Surprisingly, I had three students the first day of this educational/business enterprise. One day was all that it lasted, my bus mates were not in any financial shape to continue paying for the lessons, nor were they any longer interested.
Fortunately, I've recovered from that early experience and gone on to build a career as a classroom teacher, and later, a school administrator; however, what I always enjoy is working one on one with a student. There is nothing like being able to focus on one student, versus rushing from one to the next in a classroom of 20 plus students. A well guided student can accomplish a great deal of progress in a matter of weeks. That is precisely what I pride myself on doing with any student that I tutor: developing a learning plan and learning goals.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
