Teaching is my passion and my students are what motivate me to be an effective educator. In addition to a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and a Master's degree in Special Education, I have had 7 years of experience in the combined fields of general and special education. It is my aspiration to provide all students with an exceptional education and I strongly believe in my abilities to be a valuable asset to helping children receive the extra help they need in order to be successful.
Over past years, I have had many wonderful opportunities to teach a diverse group of students. Working with these children has helped me develop into a highly adaptable and versatile educator who is able to differentiate instruction. I have become skillful in creating effective lessons that are driven by Common Core standards and informed by student data. These activities accommodated multiple learning abilities, engaged student’s interests, and brought hands-on experiences to their learning. In my classroom I use a variety of teaching methods as all children learn differently. Aside from my knowledge of curriculum I believe that having a variety of methods makes me an excellent candidate for tutoring.
I have taught the areas of reading and grammar for several years with different approaches. I have taught standards based so I thoroughly understand the requirements and know which areas pose as problematic for children. I have also taught standards whole group and know how to teach and focus on multiple standards at once. There is a large focus on reading closely with the new state standards and I pride myself in helping children learn to read for deeper meanings and understanding. I have numerous strategies to help with this skill, a skill that is extremely important to learning.
Teaching 3rd grade for the past 7 years gives me a solid understanding of what students need to learn in the lower elementary grades, as well as what will be expected as they move to higher grade levels. I have had experience teaching all academic areas and am able to teach cross categorical to cover and incorporate multiple standards at once. I have spent many hours in professional development learning new programs and strategies to help children learn. While teaching in Arizona I worked with a panel of teachers, administration and state curriculum members to revise and rewrite our math curriculum calendar with a large focus on the new Common Core standards.
I have worked with children who are at all levels of the reading process. My special education background has allowed me to work with children who are just learning to read to children who need help decoding multi-syllabic words. I have worked closely over the years with literacy coaches in the schools I taught in to understand the reading process and phonemic awareness. In addition I have had many trainings to strengthen my teaching skills in this area.
Teaching is my passion and my students are what motivate me to be an effective educator. I look forward to any opportunities to working with children to better their understanding of curriculum to become more successful and confident in school. I look forward to the possibilities of speaking with parents to answer any questions or further discuss my qualifications. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
