About Brooke

Hola!

My name is Brooke and I am a 23 year old CT native currently pursuing my Master's in Hispanic Studies at LSU in Baton Rouge, LA. I am home for the summer and looking to keep up my language skills by helping local students throughout the summer. I specialize in Spanish language studies but have experience tutoring in ESL as well as English.

My passion for teaching began during an undergraduate semester I spent abroad in Costa Rica. I volunteered as a guest-teacher in a local public school where I taught 5th and 3rd grade natives English. Upon returning to the states I sought any opportunity I could to continue teaching, which led me to my university's academic development center where I became a Spanish tutor. After taking a workshop that rendered me qualified to tutor at the university level, I proceeded to tutor university students in Spanish several times a week. I held bi-weekly "drop-in" hours where students could stop by and ask questions without a set appointment. I had several regular weekly students who came to me for two consecutive semesters and I was recognized as tutor of the month for my work.

During my final semester, I decided I wanted to help the community I was occupying. It was then I began volunteering as an ESL tutor at Saint Joseph's church in Newport. I helped several native Spanish speakers (of varying ages but mostly adults) with their conversational language schools once a week. I even helped one student learn enough to pass her GED.

After graduating with a double major in English Communications and Spanish in May of 2014, I knew I wanted to continue my career trajectory in education. I became a education liaison/ tutor at Newport Academy, a residential rehabilitation facility in Bethlehem, CT. There I was responsible for a variety of tasks involving school communication and setting up individual academic programs for each of our residents dependent on their needs. The students I worked with here were aged 13- 20 and struggled with a variety of mental health problems including but not limited to; anxiety, addiction, depression etc. I would often sit with a student for hours working on all high school and middle school subjects but specializing in English and Spanish. I remained in this position for a year until being accepted to graduate school. I continue to tutor Spanish via Facetime for the Academy so this experience has also familiarized me with online tutoring.

During my stint at Newport Academy, I also accepted a 4 month position as a part time Spanish teach at Watertown High School in Watertown, CT. Here, I had the opportunity to work with the teacher before she went on leave and then I took over three high school courses- Spanish 3, 4 and 5 (AP course). There, I not only taught my own classes but also graded all student work, collected data and created my own lesson plans in conjugation with other teachers in the department.

I spent the last year tutoring for LSU as part of my graduate assistantship. Ten hours a week I was available to any age/ any level Spanish student at the university for help of any kind in their courses.

Over the course the the last 5 years, I have gained extensive tutoring/teaching experience in various educational settings. I understand the importance of having a good relationship with my students. It is of utmost importance that they feel comfortable with me because studies show that anxiety and discomfort can really hinder the learning process.

Please contact me with any tutoring inquiries- looking forward to working with a variety of students of any age!
