About Carmen

I have always wanted to be a teacher. It is my passion! I enjoy seeing students gain confidence as they feel successful in the topic they have struggled with. Some students need one on one instruction in order to grasp what they are being taught and tutoring provides that opportunity. Before teaching, I tutored for one school year in a public school setting.
As a teacher I have received high scores on my yearly review. The past 2 years I received an exemplary review score. I'm always looking to improve my teaching strategies and I am very patient wit my students. I quickly build a positive rapport with students and their family. Communication is extremely important to me and the success of my students.

I currently teach fifth grade math and I often have students that are not on grade level in math. So, I work with them at their level, building on their skills to achieve success in the von tent I am teaching. I often teach math that is taught in the lower grades in order to help my students succeed.

I currently teach fifth grade reading and vocabulary through many teaching strategies that has brought success to students. I will implement those same strategies when tutoring.

I will equip students with strategies that will strengthen their handwriting and spelling skills.

I am usually available Mon, Tues, Thurs, and Fri from 4pm-7pm and Wednesday from 4pm-6pm. Please feel free to contact me with any questions and to schedule a lesson. I look forward to meeting with you and helping you succeed in your academics.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I currently teach fifth grade in a public school which we implement the Common Core States Standards in our curriculum. This is my 5th year teaching and I have attended professional development given by the district on how to teach using Common Core. Professional development is provided by the school district every month during the school year.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a Master's degree in Elementary Education from the University of Bridgeport. I am also certified to teach grades K-6 in the state of Connecticut. I was a reading tutor for one year in a public school. I tutored grades 1-5 in reading, writing, vocabulary and spelling.

Handwriting

I teach fifth grade cursive. I also conference with students that need improvement on their handwriting giving them advice and strategies on how to improve their hand writing. I follow up with those students weekly until their writing improves. Then, I follow up with them until their handwriting is grade level appropriate.

Phonics

As an educator, I provide intervention to struggling readers everyday. I previously taught DI (Direct Instruction) to students from kindergarten to third. I worked on letter recognition, phonemic awareness, vowel teams, sight words, blending and so much more. I assess the student to see where they are and build from there.

Reading

As an elementary school teacher, I work with students on the different parts of reading, such as phonics, comprehension, vocabulary, accuracy and fluency.

Study Skills

As a teacher, I assess my students weekly and I go over with them the best ways to study for their tests. I provide different ways to prepare for the test because not all students learn in the same way. Some of the strategies are; reviewing notes and assignments, using flash cards, and taking a pretest at the end of the lesson.
