About Amanda

I started tutoring math and science when I was a freshman in high school. I loved to teach and help my fellow classmates understand difficult concepts. In senior year of high school, I taught my AP Physics class for two weeks with some guidance from the AP Chemistry teach after our teacher fell ill. My classmates felt that I was able to keep us on schedule compared to just having a substitute assign us problems until a new teacher could be hired.

After high school, I attended Carnegie Mellon University where I double majored in Chemical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering. I worked for Academic Development and tutored students in one-on-one sessions and small groups. I tutored all chemical engineering and biomedical engineering courses, Calculus I to Calculus in 3D, Physics I and II, and Chemistry. I also tutored students at University of Pittsburgh and local high school students in the summer.

During graduate school at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, I was a teaching assistant for Intro to Chemical Engineering and Chemical Engineering Laboratory. I was a graduate instructor for Separation Processes for two semesters. On top of normal teaching assistant duties I also designed two unit operation modules (2 and 4 lectures) that I lectured to the class, and I developed homework assignments, exams, and finals.

I love to interact with the students and help them gain a greater understanding of a difficult concept. While working for Academic Development, my boss mentioned that I became a mentor for all of my students instead of being just a tutor. I got to know my students and help them both academically but also socially.

I tutor high school math courses and most freshman and sophomore undergraduate math courses, basic sciences (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics), as well as most engineering courses in the fields of Chemical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I have a BS in Chemical Engineering with an additional major in Biomedical Engineering. My Ph.D. work involves using chemical engineering principles and applying them to biological systems.

Calculus

I took AP Calculus AB in high school. I tested into calculus II for college and have taken calculus in 3D. I have tutored all three classes multiple times and I use calculus on a regular basis in my Ph.D. work.

Chemical Engineering

I attended Carnegie Mellon University and graduated with a degree in both Chemical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering. I am now attending Massachusetts Institute of Technology for my Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering. While in undergrad, I tutored Intro to ChemE, Transport, and Thermodynamics. While at MIT, I was a TA or was a Graduate Instructor for Intro to ChemE, ChemE Lab, and Separation Processes.

Chemistry

I am a chemical engineer in the process of completing my Ph.D. in chemical engineering. I've taken multiple chemistry courses for my degree.

Differential Equations

Differential equations are the back bone of transport in chemical engineering courses. I took graduate level transport and use the text Analysis of Transport Phenomena. His book goes into detail on how to write and solve differential equations in N dimensions. Passing this course was part of our qualifier to enter the Ph.D. program.

Elementary Math

I have been qualified by WyzAnt Elementary Math. I do have experience tutoring elementary and middle school level math. (I have a younger sister and I tutored her and two of her friends)

Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra and Matrix Algebra are core courses for transport and kinetics in Chemical Engineering. As a graduate student I've taken Numerical Methods where we study Linear Algebra among other math topics. This course was part of our doctorate qualifier exam.

Physics

I have tutored high school honors physics, AP Physics (Mechanic and E&M), Physics 1 and 2 for freshman and sophomore non-physics majors.
