As a reading interventionist for grades 3-6 and third grade teacher, I have had the opportunity to work alongside students with diverse academic abilities. I understand different learning styles and have successfully implemented specialized instruction for students with learning disabilities and ADHD. I am current in curriculum trends in all subjects specifically the Common Core State Standards in reading and writing.
I use creative lessons to teach the components of a narrative story, incorporating templates and sentence starters for students who have difficulties organizing their work. In math, students need to have a solid understanding of the basics and be able to explain how they obtained their answer. Although I love teaching writing and math, I specialize in reading with a focus on phonics, comprehension, fluency, and critical thinking skills. Starting with an initial assessment, I will pinpoint your child's needs as a reader and work specifically on this area using monthly assessments to document growth.
In all areas of the curriculum, I have a solid understanding of what it takes to achieve goal or above on the CMTs and have successfully enriched lessons in all disciplines so that all students are prepared for the state mandated test. With my commitment to high standards, and dedication to guide all children in the learning process,I am confident I can guide your child to reach her or his fullest potential in all areas of the curriculum. Excellent tutor. Very patient and encouraging. Well liked by my son for her honest approach and patience. He also appreciates her letting him choose the reading material. As an update, we have now been working with Judy for for four months, and my son's comprehension of what he reads, as well as his writing skills, have improved measurably.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a third grade elementary school teacher and instructional tutor, I have extensive experience in teaching math, reading, and narrative writing. I understand different learning styles and have successfully planned and implemented specialized instruction for third grade students with learning disabilities, ADHD, and autism.
Although I teach all disciplines across the curriculum, I specialize in reading with a focus on comprehension, fluency, and critical thinking skills. I am extremely knowledgeable in what it takes to score goal or above on the CMTs and have successfully incorporated these strands into my reading instruction.
As a third grade teacher and tutor in math, I begin each unit by giving each student a pretest to drive my instruction so that all students are challenged at their own level. Some students may need manipulatives to work out problems, while others need to be challenged with applying a skill taught to real life situations. Additionally, I use their pretests to group students for math games or to pull groups for reinforcement of a concept or skill taught. I am a patient person who loves working with children in all areas of the curriculum.
I have enjoyed working as an instructional tutor in the public school system teaching phonics to students in first grade in small group settings. Depending on the needs of the student, I introduce a new skill by using a preassessment in the beginning of the week, and then an assessment at the end of the week, to test for mastery. If a student's goal is to learn CVC words with the short vowel "a" sound, each session would include tapping each sound out and then blending the word together. Games such as word sorts, memory, and word wheels are crucial to maintain the attention of the child, as well as spelling through dictation. Reading leveled text and reviewing sight words are also practiced during each session. I have found through small group or individualized settings children excel quickly in phonics allowing them to develop into proficient readers.
As a reading tutor I have a solid understanding of various comprehension strategies that are essential to understanding text read, as well as strategies needed to be successful in written responses to text. Additionally, I am familiar with books from different genres that will keep your child engaged in reading.
