Candidate Master I have played and studied Chess since I was 12 years old. I am a life member of the United States Chess Federation. I was awarded the rating of Candidate Master through tournament competition. I study and play on the ICC and enjoy teaching.
My 8 year old son grasped many basic chess strategies as part of his lesson with Mr. Barry who was very patient with him.
I love Barry style of teaching. He is extremely patient, knowledgeable and fun. I walked away with so much insight and confidence.
A great response to one particular opening as well as some overall themes to look for as I look at the board.
Whilst being hugely patient with me as a beginner, Barry really dramatizes the power of each chess player when none of them become irrelevant and each contribute to the whole. This gives me a focus to try to protect my pieces and go into battle more kindly intelligently. What a great winter season, learning about the enjoyment of this historic game. Looking forward to next year already!
I think Barry is very knowledgeable in chess. He is very nice, patient and I think he is a fantastic chess coach. This is my first review from one lesson.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have the ability to plan, organize and implement an appropriate chess instructional program in a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop an understanding and appreciation of higher order thinking skills. Chess is an ideal method for developing higher order thinking skills and many schools use programs developed in conjunction with the United States Chess Federation, of which, I am a life member and Candidate Master. I will plan, prepare and deliver instructional activities that facilitate active learning experiences- chess problems and puzzles; develop schemes of work and lesson plans; establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities; identify and select different instructional resources and methods to meet students' varying needs; instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and equipment- utilizing over-the-board play on regulation chess sets; use relevant technology to support instruction, such as computer programs, Rybka, Fritz and other strong chess search engines; observe and evaluate student's performance and development; assign and grade class work; provide appropriate feedback on work; maintain accurate and complete records of students' progress and development. The National Scholastic Chess Foundation is another source I will use in developing an exceptional chess program for you.
