Southern Connecticut State University (Elementary Education)
I love teaching young students! My passion for education comes from years of learning under amazing teachers who have inspired me to be the best I can be. I have recently graduated from Southern Connecticut State University, where I majored in elementary education. I also have my teaching certification in this field. I am dedicated to helping students succeed in school while also promoting a safe and fun learning environment.
I specialize primarily in elementary math, but I am also proficient in areas of English. I am able to assist in grammar as well as phonics. I can also help in editing writing assignments if needed. In addition, I can provide useful study skills for students for tests. Over the years while I was a student, I learned about which methods work for particular subjects, and would love to pass them along to students.
I have had experience working with students on an educational level. I have worked in several classrooms as a student teacher in which I have developed lesson plans that I have taught to students. I have also created units, assignments, and tests in order to assess students' progress. I have worked one-on-one with students on their assignments as well.
My philosophy of teaching is that students have an active role in their learning process. This is why one the things that I do after discussing what they need assistance is to unlock their prior knowledge so that I can build lessons from there. I also believe in using different strategies such as visuals and manipulatives that may best fit the student and as well as the subject, and I encourage feedback on whether or not the student benefited from them so that I may adjust or continue using them. As the lessons continue, I like to also give practice work for home to see what the student can do on their own, as well as quizzes in order to check for understanding. These also help me adjust as well to better help the student based on what they do or do not know of the material. I try to improve myself as an educator, and would love also feedback on my performance, whether positive or negative. It is very important that I help students to the best of my ability.
I am flexible in my tutoring schedule, however, I do require a cancellation notice of at least three hours. For any cancellations, I am willing to reschedule makeup classes at a convenient time.
I look forward to hearing from parents and students who would like to meet with me! I love teaching young students! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have my Bachelor's degree in K-6 elementary education from SCSU. I also have my degree in liberal studies, which includes a minor in mathematics. I'm very proficient in elementary math and can help students to the best of my ability.
