In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Having both a knack and a strong passion for English, I decided to pursue an undergraduate major in English at the University of Connecticut, where, under the guidance of renowned professors such as Samuel Pickering Jr. (The inspiration for Robin Williams's Character in Dead Poet's Society) I studied poetry, expository writing, and drama.
As a current ESL Teacher with EASTCONN, along with having been an assistant teacher with UCAELI, an English Conversation Partner, and an International Student Tutor at the university of Connecticut, I have a solid foundation in ESL practice and pedagogy. My goal is to become an ESL teacher abroad and expose others to more opportunities by helping them learn English. I love language teaching and learning and strive to make both academic and colloquial English accessible and fun for all.
I have been a Spanish language tutor since 2007 and decided to pursue a minor in it at the University of Connecticut, where I took courses which focused on the rich literary history of Latin America and Spain, the social, political, and cultural practices of various countries, and a linguistics course which emphasized clear pronunciation and delineated grammatical rules and linguistic phenomena.
